However, their populations have become resilient to the vegetation changes that have accompanied human growth and can exist in scrub and in over-grazed areas.

1. **Classification**: They are echinoderms and relate to starfish and sea-urchins, grouped under the class Holothuroidea.

3. **Body Structure**: They have elongated, tough skinned bodies and move around using the tube feet that are located on the bottom of their bodies. The body can be soft or rigid according to different species.

4. **Defense Mechanisms**: In the case of danger or stress, certain species of sea cucumbers have the ability for evisceration: they may commit self-amputation of their internal organs, including parts of their digestive system, and regenerate these lost body parts.

5. **Feeding**: They ingest sand or mud and extract the organic matter, feeding on it.  Some species use tentacles around the mouth to trap food particles from water.

6. **Respiration**: Sea cucumbers breathe through a unique respiratory system known as the respiratory tree that is linked to their anus.

7. **Reproduction**: They multiply both sexually, by releasing eggs and sperm into the water, and asexually by a method called fission, wherein they split themselves into two parts.

8. **Economic Importance**: The sea cucumbers are considered a delicacy, having been used as traditional medicine to some people. They are collected, dried for commercial use, generally referred to as "trepang" or "bêche-de-mer."

9. **Environmental Role**: Sea cucumbers play a vital role in the recycling of nutrients within marine environments and are regarded as an essential factor in the good health of the seafloor.

10. **Conservation**: Many sea cucumber populations are seriously taken by overfishing and habitat destruction, and these are triggering efforts to regulate and manage their harvesting.
