Governance, when applied early and deliberately, does not restrict digital transformation. It ensures that transformation remains supportable as it grows.
Small, bounded initiatives anchored in clear guardrails scale more safely than large, loosely defined programmes — because they establish control before complexity emerges.

As the UK moves toward mandatory B2B e-invoicing in 2029, one design choice is already becoming clear: the UK is not building a central government platform to validate every invoice before it reaches the buyer.
Instead, the UK’s approach is expected to mirror a decentralised e-invoicing model, similar to the four-corner networks already used internationally — most notably through PEPPOL.
In this model, invoices flow directly between trading partners through accredited service providers, while HMRC remains outside the invoice exchange itself, at least in the mandate’s initial phase.
This decision is deliberate. It reflects how the UK trades today, how digital networks already operate, and how governments are increasingly balancing oversight with scalability.

B2B payments were never meant to be strategic. For decades, they were treated as the final administrative step in the procure-to-pay process — something to be executed accurately, compliantly, and as quietly as possible.

Extending payment terms is one of the most familiar tools in working capital management.
From a buyer perspective, the logic is straightforward: preserve cash, improve predictability, maintain control. Terms are negotiated, agreed, and applied consistently. Suppliers continue to deliver. Payments go out later than they used to.
On the surface, it looks clean.
What’s less visible is what happens on the other side of those terms once the invoice is approved and sent into the waiting period.
Because suppliers rarely just wait.

Early payment has quietly become one of the most powerful — and misunderstood — levers in modern working capital strategy. What was once treated as a fixed operational outcome is now increasingly shaped by broader cash, liquidity, and supplier considerations.

Invoice automation makes the whole task of sending invoices feel far less chaotic. Many teams deal with late deliveries and rushed reminders because the process relies on too many manual steps. A managed, automated approach creates a smoother flow and helps to keep customers informed while deadlines stop feeling like a constant race.

Supply chain planning has become a defining capability for many organisations to stay competitive within their industries. Businesses are forced to respond even faster than ever.
In particular, disconnected supplier systems with a lack of visibility can be frustrating for purchasing teams and procurement managers because of all the delays that it can lead to.
Other challenges can include disruptions, shortages in supply and ever-changing expectations from customers.

Purchase order importance often becomes clear when something goes wrong. A delayed shipment, a pricing dispute, or a missing invoice can all trace back to unclear orders. Strong purchase order processes create structure, because they define what was agreed, when it was needed, and how it should be delivered.
