Online training or in-person training—which is right for household staff?

Online learning offers flexibility and an immediate starting point, while in-house training can be tailored to a particular property, team and set of standards.

I have published a new guide explaining when each format makes sense, including professional housekeeping, silver service and House Manager training.

After more than two decades in private household recruitment, I've finally put my recruitment philosophy into one place.

Over the years, I've learned that successful placements are about far more than finding someone with an impressive CV. Clear roles, honest communication, realistic expectations and long-term thinking all play an important part.

If you've ever wondered how I approach recruitment, this article explains the principles that continue to guide my work.

I'd genuinely love to hear your thoughts. Do you agree, or is there something you think is equally important when building a successful household team?

Why Good Domestic Staff Leave Despite Excellent Salaries

A high salary alone is not always enough to retain exceptional household staff.

In my recent video, I explain why strong leadership, clear expectations and a well-structured role can matter just as much as pay when it comes to retaining great people.

The best private household staff are often difficult to replace — and they are not always actively looking for their next role.

Strong housekeepers, butlers, chefs, nannies, PAs and house managers are often already working, selective, and more likely to engage when a role is clear, realistic and professionally presented.

I have written a new article on why clarity matters when hiring private household staff, and why good candidates can move on quickly when the process feels unclear.

Private household recruitment is rarely just about experience.

The strongest CV is not always the strongest match.

In private service, trust, discretion, emotional intelligence, communication and household fit can matter just as much as technical skill.

This is why I often say that recruitment in private households is not simply about filling a vacancy.

It is about understanding the role, the household and the person properly.

Bespoke Bureau | The British Butler Academy

A few people have asked me recently why I've started making these videos.

After all, I'm already busy running Bespoke Bureau and The British Butler Academy!

The answer is actually quite simple.

Private service can be a surprisingly isolated industry. Unlike many professions, there is often no HR department, no trade union and very little formal support for the people working within it.

After more than 20 years in the industry, I felt it was time to start sharing some of the insights, challenges and observations I've gathered along the way.

So I thought I'd answer the question properly.

Here's a slightly longer video than usual explaining why I'm doing this and what I hope these conversations can contribute to the industry.

Sara Vestin Rahmani recently discussed this subject on LinkedIn, highlighting a trend increasingly observed across both private households and luxury hospitality environments.

Luxury aesthetics alone rarely create operational excellence.

The strongest environments are often built on consistency, communication, awareness, emotional intelligence, and strong operational structure behind the scenes.

It would be very interesting to hear whether others working across hospitality, private service, hotels, or property management are observing the same shift within the industry.
