Wanted to say thank you for the encouraging words on my last video. Thought I'd share a "behind the scenes" photo of what I've been up to recently. My Zuni mentor and myself came across this almost perfectly intact corrugated pot, emerging from a cut in the roadside. With each rain, a bit more of it becomes exposed. The archeological context is pre-Hawikuh/Cities of Cibola, going back to the Basketmaker era. Dozens of unexcavated mounds of pueblos and ashy splotches of pithouses scatter the area. More soon...
One of the Seven Cities of Cibola in Zuni land. These are the ruins of Kechi:bawa and Our Lady of Candelaria mission. Kechi:bawa is my friend's grandmother's village and translates to "City of Gypsum." One of three Spanish missions was constructed here in 1635 and was the shortest lived, only lasting about 10 years due to a priest interrupting a ceremony, resulting in the Zuni pushing in the walls of the mission here, destroying it. Kechi:bawa was a major trade center like it's sister city Hawikuh, littered with amazing pottery shards from around the region.
