A CONCEPTION is the particular way something is perceived, understood, and given form in the mind.

A CONCEPTION of God that emerges from a person, group, or culture can become so collectively accepted and embodied that eventually, people no longer recognize it as a conception of God - They experience the conception AS God.

And once that happens, questioning the conception feels like questioning God. It can feel like a threat to everything that has been built upon it.

Perhaps part of pursuing truth is learning to distinguish our human conceptions of God from the reality of God, whatever that reality may ultimately be.

I’ve received a few questions lately, both in the comments and in direct messages. Several of them are touching on similar themes, so I think it would be more helpful for me to address them collectively in a few upcoming videos. That way, I can share my thoughts more fully, and anyone else who may have the same questions can benefit from the conversation as well.

COURAGE is often the interruption needed to break the cycle.

Cycles continue because they are familiar. Even when they’re limiting, painful, or no longer serving us, there is comfort in what we know. Courage disrupts that comfort. It invites us to step beyond the familiar and into the unknown. That step may feel small, but it has the power to alter the direction of our lives. Every cycle is eventually broken by someone willing to do something different.

If we are unwilling to take the time to truly listen to and understand something we disagree with, how can we even know whether we actually disagree with it?

Beyond that, we cannot develop real literacy, real comprehension, or real critical thinking if all we ever consume are points of view that echo our own.

Our intellectual muscle may be getting weaker by the day, but we mistake it for our conviction getting stronger.

What feels like strength is often just the echo of isolation.

We become increasingly closed off within our own thoughts, and when there is nothing left but our convictions, we have to cling to them even harder. Not because they are true, but because they are all we have.

There is no ground beneath us. Only our grip on that conviction.

And the tighter we hold, the more terrifying it becomes to examine what we believe. Because if we let go, we fear there will be nowhere to land.

But if we develop our minds by exercising them, and trust our God-given capacity to think, discern, question, and grow, we never have to cling to an idea for dear life.

We can examine our beliefs without fear. We can challenge them without feeling threatened. We can refine them without losing our footing.

Because our confidence is not rooted in protecting a conclusion. It is rooted in our ability to engage honestly with reality.

We trust ourselves enough to follow Truth wherever it leads.

And when we trust our relationship with ourselves, and with Truth, to carry us through any terrain, we no longer need to cling to certainty to feel secure.

We can carry our convictions with us without fearing where honest inquiry might lead.

Some truth comes to graciously flip your world upside down. If you’re not ready for it, you’ll see it as danger and resist it.

But sometimes the very thing that feels like disruption is actually liberation trying to enter your life.

Not everything that shakes you is sent to destroy you. Some things come to break the illusion you were surviving inside of.
