Health & Science Communication: Put the Customer at the Centre
In health and science, we rightly focus on accuracy, evidence, and scientific rigor.
But we should ask another question:
Who are we communicating for?
A researcher may want the methodology. A clinician may want practical implications. A patient may simply ask, “What does this mean for me?”
That is where customer focus matters.
Customer-focused communication starts with listening: understanding people's questions, concerns, knowledge levels, and what they need to do with the information.
It doesn't mean oversimplifying science or compromising accuracy. It means making complex information clear, relevant, accessible, and actionable.
And in health, trust is everything.
People need communication that is honest about what we know, transparent about uncertainty, and focused on helping them make informed decisions.
Ultimately, success isn't just about how much information we share.
It's about whether people understand it, find it relevant, and can use it.
The best health and science communication doesn't simply deliver information.
It makes understanding useful.

Health & Science Communication: Why Customer Focus Matters
In health and science, we often talk about accuracy.
We talk about evidence, data, research, guidelines, publications, and scientific rigor.
All of these matter.
But there is another question we should ask more often:
Who are we communicating for?
Because even the most scientifically accurate message can fail if it does not connect with the person receiving it.
That is where customer focus becomes essential to health and science communication.
Science is complex. Understanding shouldn't be.
Patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and the public have different needs, levels of knowledge, concerns, and expectations.
A scientist may want the methodology and statistical significance.
A clinician may want to know what the evidence means for practice.
A patient may simply want to understand:
“What does this mean for me?”
Customer-focused communication starts by understanding these different perspectives and designing the message around them.
It doesn't mean simplifying science to the point of losing accuracy.
It means making science accessible without compromising its integrity.
Listen before you communicate
Good communication isn't just about delivering information.
It's also about listening.
What questions are people asking?
What are they worried about?
What terminology is confusing?
What barriers prevent them from acting on the information?
What does “value” look like from their perspective?
These questions can fundamentally change how we communicate.
Instead of asking, “What do we want to tell people?”
we can ask:
“What does this person need to know, and how can we help them understand it?”
That small shift can make communication more relevant, useful, and human.
Trust is part of the science
Health communication carries a responsibility that goes beyond engagement.
People make decisions based on the information they receive.
That means credibility, transparency, and honesty about uncertainty are critical.
Customer focus should never mean telling people what they want to hear.
It means respecting them enough to give them information that is:
Accurate
Relevant
Clear
Timely
Actionable
Honest about uncertainty
Trust is built when people feel that communication is designed not simply to inform them, but to help them.
From information to impact
The ultimate goal of health and science communication shouldn't be the number of reports produced, presentations delivered, or messages published.
It should be impact.
Did the audience understand?
Did they find the information relevant?
Did it answer their questions?
Did it help them make a better decision?
Did it change behaviour or improve an outcome?
These are customer-focused questions — and they are increasingly important in science and healthcare.
The opportunity
As health and science communicators, we have an opportunity to bridge two worlds:
The world of evidence and the world of human experience.
Customer focus gives us a practical way to build that bridge.
It reminds us that behind every statistic is a person, behind every research finding is a potential decision, and behind every communication is an opportunity to build — or lose — trust.
The best science communication isn't simply about being understood. It's about making understanding useful.
And that starts with putting the person we're communicating with at the centre.

The BAYA Model of Science Communication: A Simple Way to Communicate Science
Science is powerful.
But if people cannot understand it, they cannot use it.
The BAYA Model of Science Communication provides a simple way to make science clear, useful, and engaging.
B - Breakdown: Break complex science into simple ideas.
A - Audience: Know who you are speaking to.
Y - Yield storytelling: Turn facts into a story people can connect with.
A - Action: Show people what they can do with the information.
Example:
Instead of saying:
“Climate change is increasing average global temperatures.”
Say:
“Hotter days are becoming more common. This can affect our crops, water, health, and daily lives.”
Then tell a local story, explain why it matters, and give people a practical action.
The lesson:
Good science communication is not about making science less scientific. It is about making science easier to understand and use.
BAYA helps us move from science → understanding → connection → action.

When Innocence Becomes a Mask
The most dangerous person in a relationship is not always the loud one. Sometimes, it is the one who hurts you quietly and then plays innocent.
They do something wrong, but somehow you end up apologising for being hurt.
They twist your words. Change the story. Shift the blame. And before you know it, you are standing there wondering, “Am I the problem?”
That is where emotional manipulation becomes dangerous.
They may betray your trust and then act surprised by your pain.
They may disrespect you and call you “too sensitive.”
They may hurt you and then describe your reaction as “drama.”
And sometimes, they remain completely calm while you are falling apart, making their calmness look like innocence and your pain look like instability.
But remember this: being calm does not automatically mean being right.
Some people are very good at controlling the narrative. They know how to present themselves as the victim, even when they caused the wound.
They don't always seek forgiveness.
Sometimes, they seek sympathy.
They don't want accountability.
They want control of the story.
And because they can be charming, composed and convincing, other people may believe them.
But here is something I have learned about human behaviour:
A lie can run fast, but truth has a longer memory.
You don't have to fight every accusation.
You don't have to explain yourself to everyone.
You don't have to destroy your peace trying to prove what you already know happened.
Sometimes, the strongest response is to step back, observe, and let someone's patterns speak for themselves.
Because character is not revealed by what someone says about themselves. It is revealed by what they repeatedly do.
So protect your peace.
Don't spend your life arguing with someone who is committed to misunderstanding you.
And don't allow another person's manipulation to make you doubt your own worth.
A person can wear innocence like a mask, but behaviour eventually removes the mask.

SOMETIMES YOU ARE NOT LONELY
Sometimes you are not lonely.
You are simply emotionally neglected.
There is a big difference.
You can sleep next to someone every night and still feel alone.
You can talk every day and still feel unheard.
You can be in a relationship and still feel like you are carrying the relationship alone.
Loneliness asks:
“Who do I have?”
Emotional neglect asks:
“Why don't I feel connected to the person I have?”
And this is why some people remain unhappy in relationships for years.
They keep telling themselves:
"At least I have someone."
But having someone is not the same as feeling valued by someone.
Love needs presence.
Love needs communication.
Love needs emotional safety.
Love needs effort.
And sometimes the hardest truth to accept is this:
You can be loved by someone and still not be loved in the way you need.
That doesn't automatically make them a bad person.
It may simply mean that the relationship is no longer meeting the emotional needs of both people.
Don't just ask:
"Does this person love me?"
Also ask:
“How does this relationship make me feel?”
That question can change your life.

POST 4 — THE DANGER OF TESTING YOUR PARTNER
If you want to know whether someone loves you, don't create a problem just to see how they react.
Don't deliberately disappear.
Don't flirt with someone else to make them jealous.
Don't post another person just to provoke them.
Don't threaten to leave when you have no intention of leaving.
Don't say, “I wanted to see whether you would fight for me.”
These games may produce a reaction.
But a reaction is not necessarily love.
Someone may become angry because they feel disrespected.
Someone may panic because they fear abandonment.
Someone may chase you because they don't want to lose you.
But none of these automatically proves the quality of the relationship.
Healthy love is not an examination where your partner must constantly pass tests.
If you have doubts, communicate.
If you need reassurance, ask.
If you need affection, express it.
If something is hurting you, talk about it.
Because eventually, constant testing destroys the very trust you were trying to measure.
Remember:
Don't create storms just to test whether someone will bring you an umbrella.
Tell them when you need shelter.

WHEN SOMEONE STARTS PULLING AWAY
Sometimes the most painful thing in a relationship is not being told, “I don't love you anymore.”
It is watching someone who once couldn't go a few hours without you suddenly become comfortable going days without talking to you.
The messages become shorter.
The calls become fewer.
The excitement disappears.
And suddenly, you are the one asking, “What happened?”
But here is something important:
Don't chase someone who is deliberately creating distance.
Give them room.
Not as a manipulation tactic.
Not to make them miss you.
But to give yourself an opportunity to observe the truth.
Because when someone genuinely values you, you shouldn't have to constantly beg for basic attention, affection and communication.
Love should sometimes require effort.
But it should not constantly require convincing.
Remember:
When someone's behaviour changes, don't ignore it. Observe it.
And before you ask, “How do I make them love me again?”
Ask yourself:
“Why am I fighting so hard to be loved by someone who has stopped fighting for me?”

When God opens a door, no one can shut it. Don't let fear, delays, or the opinions of others make you doubt what He has promised. Keep praying, keep believing, and keep walking by faith.
