People often ask me about game recommendations. Hero shooters... maybe RPGs... but interestingly enough the most common request is "Post Apocalyptic Open World"
Well... as a kid, I used to play a game called "Dead Frontier" (Post apocalyptic BROWSER BASED zombie apocalypse)... and funnily enough its still going strong to this day.
The interesting thing is that some of the concept that make this game great... have not been successfully replicated, which makes me appreciate what they did way back in the early days even more.
Maybe its nostalgia, or an appreciation of post apocalyptic zombie themes with extremely high skill gaps... but even in a world where "TrIpLe A" studios are launching new games monthly... I find myself going back (and addicted to)... a flash game from 10 years ago, because the world/item economy they developed is impressive even today.
Also, a particular youtuber has been incredibly helpful and friendly as I return to the game... so for anyone who has interest, it would be well advised to subscribe to his channel (which has educational content for the game)... Thank you to Ameilia. Definitely subscribe to him. youtube.com/@ameiliadf2330
Half of you seeing this wont even know what this channel is, but the short version is that Upper Echelon originally began in Video Games, now covering General Media, Technology, Finance, and sometimes Politics.
This channel has a decidedly Anti-AI stance. Generative especially, but really any form of commercialized/public AI, when it acts as a crutch for the lowest common denominator of person to infect the online world with their own bad ideas, predatory behavior, and Greed. (Something that far too many people sadly resort to)
The internet already struggles every single day under the sheer weight of this problem, but now even the White House, and the United States President are perpetuating the issue by using AI generated content regularly.
What's worse... is that were not talking about irrelevant images with easily forgotten themes, were talking about visions of a desired future. (I've included a few examples in this post.)
The president of a democratic nation wearing a crown. The president depicted as the Pope. The president seen as a giant golden statue... but all of these things take on new meaning when one of the most powerful people in all of History is using them.
I don't expect everyone to agree with this next part, but on a personal level, I do have strong religious beliefs. The president desires to depict himself as a golden statue, inside a video, (which if real)... would exist in relatively close proximity to Mount Sinai.
What's more, there was a golden goat, wrapped in 100 dollar bills and depicting Trumps face, stationed at Mar-A-Lago... which gives me unignorable visions of the Golden Calf. Again, this is less poignant for people of different faiths, but I say it because I can't exist on this platform (with the audience that I have) and stay silent.
It seems that every single one of my major pivotal beliefs is now at odds with the current Administration of the United States, and while that should never impact the channel content in a way that makes it unwatchable for the broader audience, I find myself compelled to say that while I attempt to remove bias in the content that is produced on this channel, the *existence* of bias is unavoidable.
Its important for me to make a disclosure on this, because in my view, the current administration is not only promoting and utilizing technological tools in the worst way possible (generative AI for the sake of impacting public opinion)... it is also exposing itself as evil. (I understand many people have a visceral reaction to such an opinion... and I welcome any well articulated disagreements...) But at the end of the day, as someone who has strong opinions on the usage of AI, and its broader implications for the future, what I see right now is legitimately horrifying.
I would ask that anyone who watches this channel, and considers themselves a free thinker, take some time here to evaluate their own political beliefs *outside* of the comfort zone that we all typically occupy. If (at the end of that consideration) you have the same opinions, so be it, but everyone in the world is ALWAYS better off when challenging their own existing beliefs.
Wanted to put this out there as I work on a video regarding Assassins Creed Shadows... but it seems like Ubisoft is in a completely unwinnable situation with regards to public criticism.
On the one hand, they rightly face complaints when stagnating their game formula and failing to push the series forward... however on the other, as they attempt to innovate with AC: Shadows, they face criticism from a vocal portion of the community over a multitude of "issues", many of which really have nothing to do with the actual quality of the gameplay.
Full disclaimer... I'm having FUN with AC: Shadows right now, and the more I play, the more I feel like the game has something legitimate and well crafted to offer.
Ill happily criticize certain creative decisions and narrative choices, but at the end of the day I feel myself more inclined to defend the game as opposed to condemn it, and ill do my best to vocalize precisely why I think the current backlash against it is ill-founded, poorly thought out, and more than anything else, stubbornly vindictive.
Certain creators have spent literal months, raking in the ad revenue for their critiques of this game, and now (after it finally comes out) when faced with a reality where it isn't nearly as bad as they tried to claim... they are stuck in a cycle of outrage with no attempt whatsoever at self reflection.
Coincidentally... I was actually *in* Japan when this game launched (I'm back now, albeit with a nasty cold, hence the video delay) but witnessing the narrative strain so desperately to paint this game as horrifically offensive, as we somehow condemn a company for adding MORE player choice... it feels like a really strange time in video game discourse.
From Microtransactions, to revenue, sales, Yasuke, raw gameplay and more... I have a LOT of thoughts about AC: Shadows, with much of them being positive. I have a feeling ill once again make a vocal minority of viewers angry with this next video, but that seems to happen more and more lately as I begin to realize just how profitable it has become, for creators to pick a target, attack as hard as they can, farm revenue, and then move on like nothing happened if they turn out to be wrong.
Similar to Kingdom Come Deliverance 2... this feels like another one of those moments. Once again, I also have some vocal criticism of the game, (mainly centered on Yasuke)... but so far I am having a blast playing as Naoe, in a game where it feels like the numerous delays actually paid off. Believe it or not... I think Ubisoft deserves some credit here.
Anyway. Back from vacation, Japan is incredible, i certainly plan to go back (with a mobile computer setup this time so I can work remotely and not just disappear) but the content resumes shortly. Hopefully tomorrow.
I wanted to make everyone aware that I will be on a 3 week vacation till the 23rd, visiting Japan.
A pre-planned video was posted today, but that will be the last one for a couple of weeks here until I get back.
If there are major events or news drops I could conceivably do additional community posts but the long form scripted material won't return until the end of the month.
Thank you to everyone who supports the channel, I'm happy to say that a previous copyright situation has been fixed as well, and im looking forward to a break and then resuming the standard material once I'm back.
So... Recently I did a video about medical tourism, featuring a supposed world renowned Doctor named Farzan Malekzadeh.
It was critical (obviously), and in response, I started getting emails from an address called "Denemem Deneme" (Turkish for "I Dont Try, I Dont Try").
After those emails, the video got officially struck down by someone named "Heidam Staw", (without giving any timestamps for what material was infringing) and I immediately got another email, where "Heidam Staw" claims that the strike is just a CMS (Content Management System) issue, with an automated flag that will be resolved in a few days. They further claim that they have nothing to do with the original emails I received, which threatened the fake strike in the first place.
Meanwhile, I start getting repeated emails from "Denemem Deneme" *again* (they are both Turkish email addresses) saying how they will withdraw the strike, my channel is great, I just need to reach out to them... while "Dr Farzan Malekzadeh" goes on social media, calling me a SEDITIONIST and claiming I got paid 5k euros for a misinformation campaign against him. (fun side note, the posts he made were then amplified by a directed bot network similar to the kind I have previously investigated and gotten shut down)
In one of those posts he even says that the video was removed, after "Dr Farzan Malekzadeh himself" issued a request... which would make Heidam Staw the real identity of this doctor.
This has got to be one of the absolute strangest, and most hilarious sagas ive ever seen on the channel, and I will certainly be making another video, in depth, about Dr Farzan Malekzadehs lies, who he is, Heidam Staw, and everything else involved if the falsified copyright strike is not released, and the video is not reinstated to YouTube.
The most recent email I received from Heidam Staw (the party that officially struck the content without even providing timestamps of what was copyrighted in the first place) insists that within 24 - 48 hours the entire situation will be resolved. I'm looking forward to see how it all goes, because this is already one of the most entertaining meltdowns I have seen.
So... it looks like TEMU tried to strike my video about them.
The claim is that their 2D Logo was used so it has to be taken down, but YouTube straight up sided with me and told them "We believe your claim may be invalid" which made me laugh quite a bit.
No I will not take the video down. No they do not have any right whatsoever to attempt this. Yes I will continue to accurately discuss the moral and ethical issues of their company.
Props to YouTube for getting it right, I believe they deserve that acknowledgement when properly protecting creators from disgusting large companies.
HAH! The "HEX" Cult members struck the entire video over 22 seconds of footage.
They forgot what Fair Use is, what critical commentary is, and they jumped straight to an attempt at deleting the video entirely.
Ill have a talk with a Copyright Attorney this coming week. Pretty open and shut case, but since they jumped all the way to the most damaging thing they could do I want to make sure to be thorough on the response.
Figured I would let everyone know, the Financial Cult of "HEX"... is doing precisely what one might have expected a bunch of insecure crypto bros would do, when faced with cold hard reality.
I am happy to announce that the previously discussed lawsuit this channel has faced is now concluded.
Short outline.
A little over 30 thousand dollars was raised by the community to help with a litigation issue and that issue has now been closed.
I am happy with the outcome, and will have a more in depth explanation of subsequent steps in the coming week.
I will provide a snapshot of the accounting numbers, but long story short, I have decided that Upper Echelon will be paying the full legal costs out of pocket, and not relying on the donated funds.
As a result, everyone who donated will be entitled to a FULL refund, which will be dispersed likely through paypal.
I am currently looking at solutions for disbursing the refunds, due to the length of time that has passed GoFundMe as a platform seems to be unable to facilitate the refund process themselves, which means I need to find a solution with enough volume, and low enough fees to make it possible off platform. Right now that list is short and paypal appears to be one of the only viable options.
Regardless, i will have more details on that this coming week, as well as a few more channel announcements.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the channel, I am honored and humbled to say the very least.
