Some tips on resource guarding:

1. You can accidentally cause a dog to begin guarding their food or bowl if you “practice” sticking your hand in their bowl or their face while they are enjoying something. Some dogs may tolerate it, but some may start to get tense. How many times would you let someone stick their fingers into your food while you were eating before you slap their hand away?

Instead, work on walking by and dropping something of high value in or near their bowl to help build positive associations of you coming around while they eat. Or better yet, you can just leave them be! 😊

2. Whenever you’d like a toy or bone back from your dog, it’s best to work on teaching them to trade for it. Offer them a treat, another toy, etc. in exchange for giving up their item. This helps them not feel negative about it and can prevent them from running from you when they have good stuff!

3. Showing your dog you are angry and cornering them has led a lot of dogs to, at worst, feel trapped and want to snap or aggress, or at best, feel nervous around you and want to get away.

Instead, work on redirecting them, tossing treats, offering a new toy, heading outside, etc. Find another way to get your dog’s attention and get out of the sticky situation and come up with a training and management plan to address future situations.

Dogs appreciate daily food enrichment!

Whether that’s putting some food or treats in a puzzle bowl, using a food dispensing toy, or finding some pieces of kibble in a snuffle mat - give your dog opportunities to forage for food and use their nose.

The easiest way to incorporate food enrichment is to use their meals!
