I’m thrilled to reveal that “The Blind Banister”, a new album that’s been in the works, in some form, for an outrageous nine years, will be released by Nonesuch Records on March 22. You can listen to the last movement of “Upstate Obscura”, my cello concerto, below. The album was recorded this past summer with cellist Inbal Segev, conductor Andrew Cyr, and Metropolis Ensemble (longtime collaborators who you may remember from my 2013 album Home Stretch).
I was very pleased to be a guest on the @saadhaddadmusic interview series. We talk about the problem with 10-minute orchestra pieces, different approaches to relating musical form and content, notation software, whether God is dead or not, and lots of other things.
Starting today (July 9) and running through Monday (July 12) @bangonacanland is airing four short films I made for Michael Gordon’s delightfully nutty “July” pieces. Check out the whole series here: live.bangonacan.org/july/
Here's a new film of @cerronecomposer's “The Arching Path” made by the folks at Four/Ten Media. We filmed this at Rittenhouse Soundworks in Philadelphia back in March. The piece is the title track on Chris's new album, out May 21 (cerrone.bandcamp.com/album/the-arching-path)
Kettle Corn New Music presents my new film of Julia Wolfe’s two-piano monster “My Lips From Speaking” An epic deconstruction & reconstruction of the opening piano riff of Aretha Franklin’s “Think”
I've just uploaded a pair of short new videos made for @OjaiFestivals: Laurie Anderson's "Song for Bob" and my own "Wise Words." These pieces are both from the "I Still Play" album on @nonesuchrecords.
It's fun (for me, at least) to compare these new videos to the ones I made of the same pieces nearly a year ago, as part of my "Carnegie Concert from Home":
