Justice For Hire aka JFH
RIP to my Aunt Sammy, who was a major inspiration for @justiceforhire’s Detective Louisa Mendez character. Aunt Sammy passed away this morning. She was a NYPD officer (the first Latina on the force, according to many). I interviewed her several times over the years as i deepened the development of the character. She was always so gracious and shared many insights into the challenges of being first and being woman in a male-dominated field, like being given protective gear that didn’t fit her and more.
While she was a presence throughout my childhood, it was talking to her about Louisa in JFH that became the highlight of our interaction in my adulthood. I felt like I was asking her questions and showing interest into a part of her life that people no longer asked about. She always gave me enough information and inspiration to cross-reference with other my other police and military contacts to deepen the character and the story world.
Artists like @rojo_roman (art pictured here), @chadwickjcoleman and @tariqart12 brought Louisa to the comic book page and helped make her my favorite character. Later, she was brought to life by talented actresses in both animation and live action including Vanessa Rubio, Judy Marte and Angelic Zambrana.
I never got to show Aunt Sammy how much our conversations inspired, but her memory lives on through Louisa. I have a lot planned for this character and will do my best to embed the stories that are made with her essence.
Thank you Aunt Sammy and to everyone that has helped expand her memory. ❤️🙏
