Austin V Kane is fly fishing guide and Captain from Atlanta, Georgia.

Austin left investment banking in 2017 to fly fish and bowhunt for 7 months straight. The thrill of adventure calmed plans for graduate school. Now, Austin guides in Alaska (summer) and Puerto Rico (winter) and hosts expeditions throughout the fall and spring. His favorite fly fishing target is chasing after Giant Trevally on foot.

Kaniak (pronounced like maniac) stems from a college nickname and encapsulates the spirit of his travel company of the same name.

Kaniak Fishing

A fantastic fifth season of fly fish guiding in Alaska.

I'd say l'm a certified river rat after this one, more salmon fishing this summer than ever before. So much fun. Old habits die hard tho so gotta start the dump with a tank rainbow, of course.

Holler if you want to make your big fish dreams come true next summer !

Kaniak Fishing

fly fishing for rainbow trout in Alaska - if you make it all the way to Alaska, you owe it to yourself to hop on a float plane and see what the small creeks are all about.

Maxie boy turned his attention away from big kings for one day in July and, my gosh, did we have ourselves a day.

And! Look at the fish holding skills! Max is nearly a graduate from the Kaniak school of fish pics. Very proud

more Kangs for Maxie boy.

What a special week it was. The best fly fishing for King Salmon I’ve seen in my 5 summers in Alaska.

Kaniak Fishing

While we would go on to land even larger fish, for this moment we were golden gods in the presence of the greatest fish of all time.

Fly Fishing for King Salmon in Alaska - the romance is truly well deserved. What a gift to tango with such spectacular wild creatures.

Last week was Max’s third trip to Alaska and the pressure was on to try to top the exploits of the past. But my gosh did the Kings and Rainbow show up.

Kaniak Fishing

Am I willing to lose a finger(s) to land this fish?

The sole thought as I blindly exam the rock hole this Yellowmargin Triggerfish disappeared in while fly fishing in the Middle East.

Yes. Lead with the left tho.

High noon in the Middle East. The air tumbles on the horizon above a glowing flat.

Im walking the rock cliff. A humble reset of the flat after 3 failed shots at tailers.

A tail welcomes my return. and promptly refuses. and spooks. 30 seconds later, the fish returns to the exact spot. Second times the charm. I’m racing after it. Bent on staying close in thigh deep water. Nothing good happens when a trigger gets out of sight.

The pink snout breaks the surfaces. I’m going to land my first yellow margin! 8 years of trying.
The fish vanishes.

No. No. No!

How is there a hole here? The conniving sob set me up. I’ve kicked a trigger out a hole before. I’ll do it again.

Nothing. It’s the perfect refuge.

Alex arrives and grabs the rod.

My fingers trace the opening. Tapping. Dancing. Where are the teeth. Where are the teeth. Slimy skin. Caudal spikes. Tail! Safe for now. Tapping to the left. Small spike. Big spike. Moment of truth. Tail in right hand. Left presses the trigger free. I kick backwards and pull.

Yes. Yes! Yes!!

Joy. pure Joy.

(final pic shows the abrasion from said rock hole extraction)

Red Kaloi on the big screen!

Raja Kaloi by Ryan McGinnis will premiere with the Fly Fishing Film Tour in three weeks in Atlanta.

Sunday, February 2nd at the Plaza Theatre

The film tells the story of what it takes to experience fly fishing for red kaloi.

I am stoked to share the story of this captivating fish, the intoxicating jungle and rivers it calls home, and the Dayak guides and crew that make the fishing possible. ‪@FlyFishingFilmTour‬

Kaniak Fishing

If you don’t take it seriously, what’s the point ?

Although, I got Dengue fever and lost 20 lbs twice in 2024, so maybe I should be a tad less dramatic in 2025.

fly fishing for giant trevally, tarpon, bonefish, jungle oddities, roosterfish, salmon and more. It was a lovely year.

Kaniak Fishing

Striper Camp 2024 - bitterly cold and sluggish fish but Richie got his first ever striper on fly so that’s all that matters.

Fly fishing for striper is awesome, and the Humpback Whales wreaking havoc within sight of the beach is the coolest nature moment I’ve seen all year.

Kaniak Fishing

The final installment of the 30 Days in the Jungle vlog kicks off this evening!

The original plan for the final week of January 2024, fly fishing for Wolf Barb in Laos, fell apart due to national park permit issues. Suddenly, I had the enviable problem of figuring out last minute fishing plans in Indonesia.

With an undergunned arsenal of gear, I landed in West Papua on Jan 25th with big fish dreams.
