Here’s the gist: Term limits sound like an easy fix—something 87% of Americans agree on. But when we dug into the history, it turns out the story isn’t that simple. Congress doesn’t have term limits. Most states tried adding them. The Supreme Court said no. And the only way to make it happen now? Congress would have to vote themselves out of power.

But the real twist is what the states that imposed their own term limits actually learned and whether we already have term limits in a different form.
