Layers of Road Construction.

1. Subgrade โ€“ Compacted natural soil that supports the road.
It is shaped and compacted to the required density (usually โ‰ฅ95% MDD). If the soil is weak, improvement or replacement may be required.
Typical thickness: Natural ground (improvement layer may be 300โ€“600 mm where required).

2. Sub-base โ€“ Improves load distribution and drainage.
Constructed using lateritic material, gravel, or crushed rock to protect the subgrade and spread loads.
Typical thickness: 150โ€“225 mm (may increase for heavy traffic).

3. Base course โ€“ Main structural layer carrying traffic loads.
Made of crushed stone or stabilized material and provides strength and stiffness to the pavement.
Typical thickness: 150โ€“200 mm.

4. Prime coat โ€“ Bitumen applied on base course to bind particles and prepare for asphalt.
It seals the surface and improves adhesion between the base course and asphalt layer.
Application rate: 0.6 โ€“ 1.2 L/mยฒ (thin film).

5. Binder course โ€“ Intermediate asphalt layer adding strength.
Distributes traffic loads and provides a stable platform for the wearing course.
Typical thickness: 50โ€“75 mm.

6. Tack coat โ€“ Bitumen sprayed between asphalt layers for bonding.
Ensures proper adhesion and prevents slippage between layers.
Application rate: 0.2 โ€“ 0.4 L/mยฒ (thin film).

7. Wearing course โ€“ Top layer providing smooth, durable riding surface.
Designed to resist traffic wear, weather effects, and provide skid resistance.
Typical thickness: 30โ€“50 mm.
