Singer, songwriter, musician
Saleka is a classically trained, Indian American musician, who began playing piano at the age of four. As the daughter of M. Night and Dr. Bhavna Shyamalan, Saleka was raised on an eclectic combination of music. Rather than attending a traditional conservatory, Saleka made a transformative decision and enrolled at Brown University to begin her journey as an R&B singer-songwriter and study both Literary Arts and Music.
Saleka has performed at iconic venues across the United States, opening for both R&B legends and up-and-coming artists such as Boyz II Men, Summer Walker, Baby Rose and K. Michelle. In addition to music, Saleka uses her powerful voice to raise awareness for social justice reform, youth education and women’s rights. Saleka currently resides with her family in Philadelphia.

My mom and I got to speak with John Pace who is one of the incredible Reentry Coordinators at Youth Sentencing & Reentry Project. He shared a lot about the work they do, the history and political rhetoric that has shaped the criminal justice system and even some of his own personal experiences, having been imprisoned for 31 years when he was only 17 years old.
This conversation really opened my eyes to the causes and impacts of mass incarceration. I am so grateful to John and YSRP for taking the time to share your stories and educate us. Watch our full interview below.

My mom and I were lucky enough to interview Beyond the Bars! We spoke with the cofounders about how they got started, how they use music as a medium for all types or growth, and the impacts of divestment on our Philly community. Thank you Matt, Chris, and Aquil for taking the time to share with my mom and I your stories and the incredible work you do, and for even letting us come visit one of your music spaces and see the program in action! We are in awe, and so grateful.
Visit their website at beyondthebarsmusic.org to learn more about Beyond the Bars and watch the full interview. You can donate funds to their cause, but the other important thing you can donate is instruments! 🙏🏽🎵

“How Many” song and lyric video are out NOW!
smarturl.it/SalekaHOWMANY
Produced by myself, Ezmedi Akalonu & Warner Meadows
Vocal production by Mama Jan
Guitar and bass by Brahm Genzlinger
Engineered by Joel Metzler
Mixed by Joel Metzler and Shawn Grove
Mastered by Colin Leonard at SING Mastering
Lyric Video directed by Raf 'Rafatoon' Perez
Animated by the amazing team at Dreambear
This song was written in response to the systemic oppression and racism happening in our country, and around the world. It was written during moments of darkness and despair and so what came out was an expression of my disbelief at the system, at the absence of justice and accountability, and at the lack of value and care for human life. The lyric video directed by Raf was created as a visual metaphor for the larger systems at play that create and incentivize these horrors. There is so much to say on this subject, and I will be getting more in depth with it over the next weeks but for now I want to start by sharing this quote from the brilliant author/journalist Isabel Wilkerson:
“The caste system… goes about its work in silence, the string of a puppet master unseen by those whose subconscious it directs, its instructions an intravenous drip to the mind, caste in the guise of normalcy, injustice looking just, atrocities looking unavoidable to keep the machinery humming, the matrix of caste as a facsimile for life itself and whose purpose is maintaining the primacy of those hoarding and holding tight to power.”
- Isabel Wilkerson, from “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents”

The biggest honor of my life was getting to write a song for my dad's movie, OLD. It still feels unreal. One of the most magical moments I’ll never forget was being on set in the Dominican Republic with my whole family for the shoot, watching Thomasin (as the character Maddox) sing the song in the most beautiful heartbreaking scene. Here is a little behind the scenes snippet of my dad and I talking about the family collaboration on #OldTheMovie❤️

#OldTheMovie is out in theaters now !!!! ⌛️And “Remain” is available on all platforms!! smarturl.it/SalekaRemain 😊
Thank you Joel Metzler for your masterful engineering and mixing on this track! And even more so thanks for your patience with me as I re-recorded and re-mixed everything over and over till the very last second. Thank you for accepting my irrational creative process and being down for the ride.
Shout out to Brahm Genzlinger who expertly transcribed my string arrangement! And to the amazing string players who Joel and I had the privilege of recording for this track: Pauline Kim Harris (Violin 1), Conrad Harris (Violin 2), Celia Hatton (Viola), and Hamilton Berry (Cello)🔥🔥🔥🔥
“Remain” is a sort of dark cinematic ballad but it is also ultimately a love song, inspired by the relationship between the two main characters in "Old."
So yea, take ur friends out and go watch this sick movieeee !!! And I hope u like the song ❤️
