I'm a daily wearer of historical clothing and a Volga Tatar. I’m also passionate about experimental archaeology. I show how these aspects can intersect, by glimpsing firsthand into what it may have been like for people historically, applied in a modern context. I also discuss historical fashion and hand sewing and how we can interact with the world in a more compassionate, sustainable, and connected way.

For my own everyday clothing, I wear Ancient Greek, Viking, Medieval, Renaissance, Victorian, and other eras, as well as incorporating more of my Indigenous (Turkic) dress. All the garments I make for myself are 100% hand-stitched and are slow to construct! I feel working by hand is a wonderful way to connect with the process of sewing and to show the durability of hand-sewn garments.

This is a welcoming space for all genders, sexualities, ethnicities, and any other marginalised groups.

Thank you so much everyone for 200,000 subscribers! Around this time last year I hit 100,000 subscribers, so it feels incredible to see how exponentially the channel has been growing. There are many more exciting topics planned for the coming year, and I'll also begin shooting the episodes for some of my dream projects. I appreciate your ongoing support!

P.S. The photo is a self-portrait, and was actually extremely difficult to shoot. But in the end, it turned out the way I had envisioned it.

I got invited to be a guest on one of my favourite podcasts recently, "This Podcast is a Ritual" with Devin Person, and I wanted to share the resulting episode with you all.

We talked about my recent poetry book, "Through the Vale," as well as experimental archaeology, Tatar culture, and so many other things!

I'm wishing you all a happy New Year! ✨

This past year, I honestly worked a lot as there are so many responsibilities when you run a one-person production company, and my business is still in the liminal years where I cannot yet hire others to assist consistently. Over the holidays, I decided to take some proper time off, and now I am continuing to rest, so I will be back with a new video on the 17th of January (and after that, the 31st of January) 🙂

May 2025 be filled with more balance, many moments of joy, and much time for peaceful rest!

The photo is one I took during the Victorian Food Week. I couldn't resist capturing the image because the candles looked so atmospheric.

Since I was 13, I've dreamt of releasing a poetry book. I'm in my late 20s and today is finally the day!

I'm excited to announce that my book "Through the Vale: Poems About How Nature Brings Us Back to Life" is now available online!

This is a little bit of a soft launch. In a couple of weeks, I will have expanded distribution and it will become available on more sites outside of Amazon.

I intentionally chose to self-publish the book, as very often in this industry, books published directly by authors are seen as less professional, and I wanted to help reduce some of that stigma.

I couldn't have done it without the help of friends. A big thanks to Anna, Natalie, Mavgaret, the book cover designer (who wishes to remain anonymous), my friends who read my manuscript and provided feedback, as well as the people who beta-read my book. I couldn't have done it without everyone!

Here's a little bit about my book:

"This heartfelt collection plunges into the depths of human experience, the natural world, and Indigenous wisdom, honouring the interconnectedness and magic of life. In Through the Vale, V. Birchwood weaves elements of her rich Volga Tatar culture and language into a poetic tapestry that reflects both resilience and vulnerability. She unearths the profound connections we all share with our environment, ancestors, and communities, bound by the infinite and indescribable force of love. Birchwood’s stanzas explore the spiral-like journey of complex PTSD recovery, grieving and celebrating the transitions of nature as both farewells to the past and paths for rebirth. Because the only way out is through."

If you would like to purchase my poetry book, and the very first book I've ever published, here are links to do so! If you don't see your country on the list, please check your own go-to Amazon site.

Thank you so much for your continued support of my art and my channel. If you have any questions regarding the book and the process, or just questions in general, place them in the comments and I'll answer some as a little Q&A!

Some exciting news, I just started monthly historical poetry or story reading over on Patreon for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th tiers. I've received many beautiful comments the past few years of people expressing that they find my voice soothing or that they watch my videos to relax in the evening (thank you 🙂). For £8 per month, you get access to my monthly historical poem/story readings, as well as other perks such as Patron voting power, photos of completed garments, and life/sewing updates, some being early-access content and some that I never release to the public. If you'd like to hear a preview of this month's reading or learn more, follow the link below:

A little update about the Victorian spinach ice cream (Iced Spinach à la crème). I waited for it to defrost a bit more until it was breakable with just a spoon (so I didn't need to ice pick away at it again 😂) and I paired it up with a goat feta cheese, tomato, cucumber, and olive oil salad, and it was so delicious! The spinach ice cream almost served as a creamy dressing. If you haven't seen my Victorian spinach ice cream video yet, be sure to watch it here. It was quite the experience!: https://youtu.be/56aR9zMfRlc

Thank you so much for all the support I've been receiving on my Historical Food Week series (including the latest episode on ancient Greek food!)

I'm continuing to plan future episodes for the series and wanted to create a poll to get some input from all of you. As you may have guessed, I play the narrator for the episodes, and the reason I originally chose to do the voice-over is because it made sense with my schedule, budget, etc. I have received the occasional feedback that this comes across as pretentious since I refer to myself in the third person, even though that's definitely not my intention and I am well and truly trying to play a different character (the "Narrator") 😂 For all of the episodes, I upload captions (and even include some hidden humor) for this differentiation to be clearer.

I have considered eventually hiring a voice actor for the narration, and I believe it may be possible for the next episode. How would you feel about suddenly hearing a voice actor in place of myself for the role of Narrator? I would, of course, select someone that I feel best fits the energy of the episodes, and pay them fairly.

Thanks in advance for your input!
