New Givi Screen for my Classic 650

I’ve seen quite a few discussions about screens for the Classic 650, and I’ve been considering one myself for a while. After doing some research, I decided to take the plunge and went for a Givi A660 Universal Screen.

I think it suits the Classic 650 surprisingly well, even though it isn’t specifically designed for the bike. In fact, Givi demonstrate the A660 fitted to a Classic 650 on their website, which gave me a little more confidence that it would work aesthetically as well as practically.

I know some may question the rationale for putting a screen on a classically styled bike, and I completely understand that. But the Classic 650 has a very upright riding position, which is lovely for slow bimbles and enjoying the scenery. I’ve found, though, that on faster roads, particularly motorways and quicker A-roads, the head-on wind can become quite tiring, especially over longer distances.

I’ve just taken it out for its first proper test ride, and I’m absolutely delighted with it. The difference on faster roads was huge. It takes a lot of the pressure of the wind off, making the ride noticeably more comfortable.

If you only ever ride at slower speeds, I wouldn’t say a screen is essential. For me, though, the occasional faster road and, perhaps more importantly, riding through the colder months, means I think it will make a real difference by reducing both wind and cold fatigue.

For reference, I’m 5ft 9½" (177cm). I get a very slight amount of buffeting, but it’s so subtle that it doesn’t bother me at all. I may experiment with one of the inexpensive clip-on deflectors for the top of the screen at some point, just to see if I can eliminate it completely.

The photos don’t quite do it justice, but hopefully they give you a reasonable idea of how it looks on the Classic 650.

I’m certainly not suggesting this is the best screen, there are plenty of reasons to consider other options. I have no connection with Givi or any supplier; I bought this with my own money and am simply sharing my experience of one particular option.

I thought it might be useful to share, as I’ve been trying to find information and real-world experiences of screens on the Classic 650 myself, and there doesn’t seem to be a huge amount out there.

Well, after much thought, many conversations, a fair bit of overthinking, and a few rides through the Hampshire countryside…

I’ve decided to keep the Classic 650.

Ironically, while trying to decide whether to sell it, I rediscovered how much I enjoy riding it.

This week also marks the bike’s first birthday, so I treated it to a small present: a set of bar end mirrors. 🎂🏍️

Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts, advice and encouragement over the last few weeks. Whether you agreed with me or not, the conversations helped me think things through.

I’ll be sharing a video in the next week or two explaining what changed, what I learned from the process, and why I came to the decision I did.

For now, though, I’m looking forward to putting a few more miles on the clock and simply enjoying the ride.

Funny things, motorcycles.

You can spend days analysing depreciation, insurance, servicing costs and practicality, convincing yourself you’ve reached a sensible conclusion.

Then you head out for a quiet ride through the Hampshire countryside.

The miles pass easily. The engine settles into its rhythm. You find yourself smiling inside your helmet for no particular reason. And before long, you’re standing beside an old church lychgate, looking back at a motorcycle you had almost convinced yourself it was time to let go.

Sometimes a ride reminds you that not everything of value can be measured on a spreadsheet.

No final decisions yet. Just a photograph, a beautiful afternoon, and the growing suspicion that a little more riding and a little less analysing may be the wisest course for now.

Some of you might have noticed I’ve quietly taken down (almost) all the music videos from this channel. Nothing dramatic they’ve just moved. If you’re interested, past and future music stuff now lives on my music channel, Time & Feel.

The roads may be wet and muddy, but I’m determined to enjoy this Classic 650 all year round.

Met a non-biker friend for lunch today. The sun poked its head out, so I thought, why not take the bike?

She needs a wash now but so do I after that ride. Worth every splash.
