Today is Valentine's Day! In Japan, many people give chocolates. There are many types: "Honmei" (for someone you love), "Tomo" (for friends), "Gyaku" (from men to women), and "Giri" (obligatory). So today, I had... Ch... Chinese food! How are you all spending your Valentine's Day? 今日はバレンタインデーですね。日本ではチョコレートを渡す人が多いです。本命チョコ、友チョコ、逆チョコ、義理チョコ…。いろんなチョコレートの種類があります。 なので私も今日はち…中華を頂きました。 皆さんはどんなバレンタインデーを過ごしますか?
The previous live stream was too long, so the comments were deleted. Sorry about that.
The comment I was able to confirm was probably:
“What should I start with when learning Japanese?”
So I will answer that.
Since I don’t know the commenter’s Japanese level or their goal, I’ll assume three different patterns and answer accordingly. In all cases, patience is very important!
① You want to use Japanese for work or live in Japan.
→ Learn hiragana and katakana first, then kanji.
In the worst case, you can look up kanji as you go, but at minimum, mastering hiragana and katakana is essential. After that, work on learning grammar with the goal of obtaining the JLPT.
You’ll probably encounter many things you don’t understand. You can look them up online or try signing up for online lessons. Of course, you’re also very welcome to leave comments on my channel. As for work and living arrangements, if you take action yourself, you can usually make things work somehow.
② You want to make Japanese friends.
→ Talk to Japanese people.
There are many Japanese people who want to learn foreign languages.
If you ask, “I’ll teach you my language, so please teach me Japanese,” you can probably find a language partner relatively easily.
You can look on language exchange apps, online forums, or even in cafés. These days, if you look, there should be endless communities out there.
One thing I want you to be careful about when talking with a language partner is “don’t expect too much.” Your enthusiasm for learning Japanese and the other person’s enthusiasm for learning a foreign language will not always match. So even if their replies are slow or they suddenly stop contacting you, it’s better for your mental health to think, “That’s just how it is.” If you really can’t tolerate it, look for the next partner. Learning should enrich your life, not waste it.
Also, please respect the other person’s culture. It’s natural not to know everything about another country or culture. If you feel that your behavior may have hurt the other person, apologize immediately and ask them to teach you about their culture. If you didn’t do it out of bad intentions, they will probably understand. On the other hand, there may be times when the Japanese person says something that doesn’t respect your country or culture. In that case as well, please explain it to them gently.
③ You want to watch Japanese anime or read manga in Japanese.
→ Just like in ①, first learn hiragana and katakana. Then watch anime and read manga as much as possible.
My recommendation is: once you find a work you like, watch it over and over again. Memorize your favorite phrases and words as they are. Many expressions used in anime and manga can’t be learned from textbooks. That’s why actually watching anime and reading manga can be the shortest path to learning.
When it comes to manga, you may encounter a lot of kanji you can’t read. In that case, just snap photos with Google Lens. We live in a convenient era. Even so, there will still be characters you really can’t figure out. When that happens, ask me. I’ll answer as much as I can.
If you’ve read this far, you have “patience.” That means you’re well suited for learning Japanese. I hope your Japanese learning journey will be a good one. #jlpt#japanese#learningmethods
The JLPT was held this month. Well done to everyone who took the exam. You'll probably be anxiously waiting for the results, but treat yourself to something delicious. It's been really cold in Japan lately, so I recommend hot pot. 🤤 The photo shows a souvenir from Hokkaido. ✨
I had a Taiwanese person cook Taiwanese food for me. It seems to be a dish called 'Conroe Han'. It was so delicious that it seemed a shame to eat it right away. Do you have any favorite dishes?
It seems that there is a good catch of saury in Japan this year. This is why cheap and delicious saury is available in supermarkets. Eating saury makes you feel the autumn.
