1937
SQUIRE DROPHEAD COUPE
Adrian Squire was just 21 when he set out to build his own
motor car. At age 18, Squire was apprenticed to Bentley
Motors and later worked as an assistant draftsman at MG.
In 1931, he inherited sufficient capital to finance his venture
and set up shop in 1934 on the river Thames. His chassis
was exceptionally rigid and featured adjustable shocks and
oversized hydraulic brakes. His engine of choice was a 1.5
liter DOHC supercharged 4 cylinder
"Anzani"
sourced
engine rated at 110 HP mated to a Wilson preselector 4 speed
gear box. A host of technological advances made the Squire
very fast and extremely capable on the race track, some say
better than the Type 55 Bugatti and Alfa Romeo 8C 2300,
which was its competition. Only 10 were completed before
production would end due to high cost. This example is the
only one that was fitted with sleek coachwork by Corsica; a
small high quality British firm that produced one-off designs
per their customer's whim. This car spent its life in Europe
before importation to San Francisco in 1984, where it was
treated to a compressive restoration by local artisans and has
earned many 1st place awards at pre-eminent Concourses.
