There is Hope.

There is a God.

There is unfathomable beauty in the infinite folds of this reality, no matter how dark the spaces between them may seem.

The heartbreak is the demolition phase.

Freshly turned earth in which to plant new seeds. Don't stop there. Plant. Build.

The great Christopher McIntosh, who has been a guest on this channel twice, has released his autobiography, which I have been waiting for for a long time. I am grateful to these scholars who add so much to our intellectual, emotional, and spiritual lives, and I greatly appreciate when they tell us their stories, which they too often are too humble to think are significant.

I can’t wait to read this, and I can’t wait to talk to Chris about it and share it with all of you.

Someone just called me an "influencer." To those of you who follow this channel, let it be known that anyone who calls me an influencer is not welcome here! You risk severe consequences! 😂

I'm a guy talking about his weird interests with fellow travelers. "Influencer" is a four-letter word where I come from.

"Oh, lord, don't let me be misunderstood (to be an influencer)." -- Eric Burdon (kind of)

Remember when the whole
vast mystery of Existence
seemed like a beautiful riddle
just waiting for you to solve it,

a work of art just waiting
to be made real
by your eyes seeing it.

Remember belly laughter,
embracing everything you found,
and the shameless call of heroism
in your sincere young heart.

Just remember.

Remember standing upon the darkened shore
of the Ocean of the World,
covered with bruises no one else could see —
bruises you knew every dimension of.

Remember lifting your chin defiantly,
stone-steady gaze, sneering at the sky
and saying, “Well, let’s have at it, then.”

“I’m ready,” you said.

And you’re ready now, again.

Remember, friend.

Lift your head up and look

the thing you’ve been missing
wants to be found
but only by one brave
and persistent enough
to find it.

Remember, remember, remember…

The virtue of hardship is clarity. When times are good, we have the privilege of luxury beliefs - about life, about ourselves - but when the chips are down and our face is in the ditch, all those illusions flit away like origami moths that never had any real vitality in them to begin with.

In hard times, there is only Truth. Something either works, or it doesn't. Things are too pressing to pretend otherwise. I know if X succeeded because it put food on the table. I know X failed because I'm hungry.

Amazing clarity exists in the fire, in winter...time to strip down and toss away, get lean, get focused, and block out the distractions that once seemed like viable pursuits.

On the battlefield, one warrior lives, the other dies. It's that simple. Only the princes have time to ponder over nuance and implication.

Look, Roadmarks by the great Roger Zelazny isn't a book of philosophy exploration or spiritual depth, but as far as just-dang-fun adventure stories, it will always be among my favorites.

I still remember the day I found this book, travelling across the country, having stopped off in Flagstaff, Arizona, 18 or 19 years old, still remember pulling it off the shelves (strangely, literally, I remember the big windows to my side and the couch and everything), looking for a simple read, and being totally engrossed. The book made me a Zelazny fan.

I've read Roadmarks a couple times since and preparing for numero tree.

"The Orchard Keeper" by Cormac McCarthy gets more interesting the more times that I read it. I love books like that.

Today I had to remind myself that spirituality is not an end in itself. The end is Life, both here and hereafter. Too easy to forget this and become lodged in spiritual pursuits as ends in themselves. Incorrect and potentially destructive thinking. This world is a world of ACTION. I suspect the others are, too.
