To...Dario Argento
Born Sept 7th 1940 in Rome Dario Argento is one of the world's most celebrated, unique & arguably one of the greatest horror directors of all time.
An OG in helping to create, establish & revolutionize the Giallo/Italian Horror sub genre that was made famous by filmmakers such as Sergio Martino, Mario Bava, Lambero Bava, Lucio Fulci & Umberto Lenzi just to name a few. Dario is definitely among the most successful & respected of all of the horror filmmakers...Ever!
From 1970 to 1987 Argento put together a streak of great Italian Horror/Giallo films that are still being studied, copied & loved more than ever today 40 & 50 years later. His work is beyond difficult to match for several reasons.
His natural touch, his uncanny visual appeal, (use of color), the stylish "controlled gore".
One of his best contributions to the horror genre is kinda a (Neo-Giallo). He somehow put the perfect spin of supernatural elements into the thriller & mystery. Sometimes he added alot of creative supernatural elements to the stories but still somehow be able to make what almost felt like a textbook giallo film was amazing. Then turn around & make a great straight up giallo like Deep red.
9 straight films in 17yrs & most of them are great imo. Four flies on Grey velvet, Cat O' nine tales, Bird with the crystal plumage, Deep Red, Suspiria, Inferno, Tenebrae, Phenomena & then Opera in 1987.
Not to mention other really good films of his throughout the years like The Stendal Syndrome, Trauma, Sleepless, The Card player, Dark Glasses, etc.. He lent a creative & supportive hand to George Romero on Dawn of the dead in 1978. Memorable work with great actors like Piper Laurie, Karl Malden, Jennifer Connelly, Donald Pleasance, John Saxon, Adrian Brody, Brad Dourif, Jessica Harper etc.. Married to legendary horror queen Daria Nicoladi for many years to which he co-wrote Suspiria. He had two daughters very successful director & actress Asia Argento & his first daughter Fiore Argento who was in Phenomena & Lamberto Bava's Demons.
Dario is still active to this day. He is one of the greatest & most creative minds in film history.
Not only of horror & giallo/italian horror but of any genre of film.
