This is a story that no one outside of my close circle of friends knows.
I shot my debut surf film, "100 Spots, ONE Day," this past summer and premiered it in November. It was the biggest moment of my surf career.
It started out as a backyard premiere that I assumed my friends would show up to, and possibly a few viewers of the channel. Long story short, it turned into a huge event. I got a pretty insane venue in the heart of Waikiki, and they were stoked on the project. they were taking care of all the logistics of the screening, so now my job was: 1. to make a good movie, and 2. to market the heck out of it so that people actually showed up to this thing.
I started working on trailers, posters, and Instagram reels, and flooded all my socials and the venue's socials with promotional content for this crazy thing that I had accomplished and made a film about. Pretty soon, it felt like a majority of the island had heard about my film, but there was actually a big problem with that.
See, if you are not familiar with Hawaii surf culture, it's very localized, and if a spot isn't very well known, there's a pretty regulated rule of absolutely NO FILMING there.
I'm not going to lie, I surf a good amount of these "secret" spots in this film, but I knew this unwritten rule. I have for a long time, and I had no intention of breaking it... so I didn't.
But on a small island like Oahu, with an even smaller surf community, rumors spread like wildfire.
All of a sudden, it felt like every local on the island was against me. I was getting DMs, the venue was getting DMs, my local friends were getting phone calls, I was getting phone calls, and at its peak, I was getting threats that people were going to show up to my film premiere and jump me. They thought I was going to expose every secret wave on the island.... (to be continued)
this was the last thing I sent to my new email community, plus they got a private link to the premier version of my film

I Surfed Everyday for 5 years, here's everything I learned:
Surf waves no one else surfs
Surf when it’s shitty
Surf when you don’t want to
Pull into barrels — that’s the only way to get better
Don’t try to surf like a pro
Slow your movements down
React to the wave, don’t force turns
Every turn starts with a bottom turn
The deeper the bottom turn, the more vertical the top turn
Don’t do turns you don’t have speed for
Stay in the top third of the wave when you need speed
Float over sections — don’t go around them
Floaters help you transition
Take off at an angle
On takeoff, pause and read the wave before pumping
Move your feet front to back — constantly
Back foot goes on the tail when you turn
Further back foot = more pivot, more speed required
Pump with your feet further forward
Pop up with your back foot first
Stay over your board
Get low — bend at the knees, not the waist
Your head leads your turns
Use your front arm to guide you
After the bottom turn, swing your back arm to set up the top turn
Keep your shoulders square to the wave
Don’t extend too early
Compression and extension are everything
Don’t lay back
Don’t “power” surf
Master the basics before trying new turns
Surf equal lefts and rights
Practice backside — it helps your frontside (and vice versa)
Learn how to actually catch waves
Paddle with your chest high
Paddle with confidence and power
Paddle with your feet together
Start on a board with more width and volume, then size down
Volume is your friend
Don’t jump straight to a high-performance thruster
Try different boards — especially your friends’
Twin fins can handle bigger surf
Fins matter more than you think
Pivot fins feel loose, raked fins give hold
Match fins to the wave and your style
Film yourself surfing
Watch pro surfing — study technique, not tricks
Watch old surf movies
Surf with people better than you
Talk to better surfers about boards and waves
Some lineups are ordered, some are chaos
Find inside waves — don’t just sit where everyone else is
Don’t paddle around people
Don’t make enemies in the lineup
Know your limits
Don’t beat yourself up
Be nice to yourself
Have fun
Remember where you came from
Set one small goal every day
Set one big goal every week
Track your progression
Surf every single day
