The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is calling out Disney’s new partnership with OpenAI!
The WGA says the deal appears to “sanction its theft of our work” and gives the value of writers' creations to a tech company that built its business on their backs.
The WGA alleges the deal exploits the work of its members to train AI models. Because of this, the union is demanding a meeting with Disney to fully investigate the terms of the deal, particularly concerning the use of WGA members' work in user-generated videos.
The union pledges to "continue to fight to protect our members' creative and economic interests in the context of AI technology." This is the latest battle in Hollywood over AI’s impact on creative rights and compensation.
Disney has entered a three-year licensing agreement with OpenAI that allows users to create and share short-form videos in Sora using over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. The deal makes iconic animated characters available for AI-generated storytelling, opening the door for fans to imagine and produce new cross-universe scenarios.
