Black Expat Stories
James Baldwin was one of the most prolific American authors, recognized for his novels, essays, plays and poems addressing complex socio-political dilemmas of the day.
Disillusioned by racism and the oppressive conditions in the United States, Baldwin became an expat in 1948, at just 24 years old.
He decided to settle in Paris, France - a location that offered him the freedom to create the literary works for which he is acclaimed.
Baldwin’s #expat life was an example of what’s possible when we choose our freedom, which - in his words - is something that can’t be given, only taken.
And sometimes, the freedom you take means giving yourself the permission to experience the warmth of FOREIGN suns.
