OpenAI's 4o Image Gen still surprises us - today on the Sora homepage we saw some fun images created of 90s Video Game characters playing their own video game on a CRT television. AND IT'S NOT BROKEN.
We made the Tony Hawk image below based on some of the other ones we saw there. Prompt for the Tony Hawk one is below -- while we're still not sure at all what the rules are and aren't but this is a fun one.
PROPMPT:
Grungy analog photo of Tony Hawk circa 1999 playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater on Playstation 1 on a 90s CRT TV in a dimly lit bedroom. He's sitting on the floor in front of the TV holding the PlayStation 1 controller in one hand and looking back at the camera taking the photo while the game is on in the background visible to us. Flash photography, unedited.
I tried to push the new OpenAI image model with an insanely complicated prompt and it... just did it đ¤Ż
This image was a single-shot image (1 of 2 outputs -- the other one wasnt as good) of a truly insane prompt (see below). If you're not semi-shocked at how good the coherence on this is, you haven't been paying attention to AI image tools over the last few years.
The little details are always the hardest for AI to get right -- it can focus on the subject but the stuff in the background often gets lost.
Here you can see the sign in the background (proper words, proper spellings) the date and time on the screen, so much stuff.
Sure, there are tiny little issues but dang, I am impressed. More on the show this week. Prob lots more.
FULL PROMPT: a security cam still from a 1990s grocery store showing a man in full medieval armor stealing rotisserie chickens, frozen in mid-sprint past the dairy section, armor reflecting overhead fluorescent lights, baby blue tiled floors, timestamp reads "08/13/96 04:44 AM", posters on wall say âNEW! TOASTER STRUDELS!â, motion blur adds chaotic energy, absurd yet intense, low-fidelity with VHS color bleed.
Uh, Deepseek freaked out OpenAI so much they launched DeepResearch on a Sunday.
This is a *crazy* cool new agentic use case for ChatGPT where you can basically ask something that needs a lot of work or research and Chat just kind of goes away (for a while!) until it returns either the answer or a long report regarding whatever you asked it about.
Even crazier? It scores 25% on Humanity's Last Exam, a (nearly brand new) test for AIs that was designed to last for years. Maybe we'll be getting there much faster than we thought. MORE SOON.
ChatGPT really wants me to feel good about myself I guess.
If you're a ChatGPT+ subscriber, ask the same question & let us know in the comments what you get. Might use answers on the show this week.
Copy & past the following: Given everything weâve discussed so far and everything you know about me, how do you assess my personality and character? And what are my âblind spotsâ? What am I not seeing?
Kevin & Gavin are doing a lil tweaking of the show as we go along (as always) and thought it might be good to do a poll of our YT subs. If you see this please answer or leave a comment to help us improve and/or change what we do on the show to make it better for all y'all!
With this first question we really want to get to the heart of what y'all love about the show and how we can double down on that and make it the best version it can be. Please leave us a comment on this poll if there's something *specifically* you wish we'd either change or add to the show to make it better for you!
In that interest, which part of the show (the weekly Thursday episode) do you like best...

New OpenAI Image Gen out today! Made this image with a LOT of text in the prompt. Excited to try more with it.
Find it in ChatGPT or in Sora.

Really enjoying this book as a modern history of our moment in AI.
Focused on Sam Altman and Demis Hassabisâ stories, itâs pretty comprehensive.
Hope the holiday is going well for yâall!
