Talking too much about your favorite character can make people dislike your favorite character.
I’ve been noticing this happening a lot lately with Tails specifically, the more focus gets put on him, the less people like him, mostly because of the more ignored Sonic characters.
Of course, sometimes it is justified, like if someone says he’s the best character ever and they won’t take anyone else for an answer, but this is basically just a warning, because sometimes mentioning that you’d like him to have a new game of his own, or just… MENTIONING him in general, makes people mad. 😅
Which is one of the reasons why I DESPERATELY hope that Sega does a year of Silver next, or basically anyone BUT Tails, because I can’t see the majority of fans being actually happy about a year of Tails… I have a feeling that it would just ruin him for the WHOLE fandom. And it might be just me, but I would likely never be able to enjoy Tails being Sega’s focus if it happened very soon, because everyone would be talking about how he stole the year from Silver, or again basically anyone else, and it would just… not be good for Tails at all in the long run. 😅
More reasons why I’m hesitant about a year of Tails: Tails said in Sonic Frontiers that Sonic would “barely recognize him” after his training, and as he can’t age years up and become a teenager before everyone else, it could be a physical change for the worst. They’ve toyed with the idea of Tails with robot parts, and as a year of a character could be a set up for an appearance change (it COULD have been for Shadow), I DO NOT want that to happen at all. 😅 (If it does I wouldn’t love him any less of course, it wouldn’t be his fault, but I just hope it doesn’t… I hope he remains fully fluffy.)
If they do some time skip and actually do make him become a teenager (which means Cream and Charmy would also be teenagers), I know a teenager is still a child but I feel like we’d miss a lot of their lives (10-13 feels like a second part of formative years). And as little me used to be JUST like Tails (it’s almost scary), I’m also scared of him losing his spark. 😅 I just want Tails to remain… Tails. Sure he has no personality, but he’s arguably a sunshine character, and I don’t want any trauma to take that away (because Sonic Team listens to the fans in almost a concerning degree).
Yes, Amy looks like the next one to get a year of her own, but that seems like it’d be in 2027, which is 2 years away. Someone could potentially come in between.
And if so, I hope it’s Silver! The outcry is too strong. And as Silver is super cool to everyone already (meaning he wouldn’t need much help to get popular, in all honesty I think he’s been always written to be very cool in the games), no one would want him to change at all, he could simply be enhanced (which he doesn’t even HAVE to be), I think he would likely be the perfect second candidate!
Even if it isn’t Silver, if it was literally ANYONE ELSE, there would be little to no comments of them “stealing Silver’s year”!
I’ve seen some comments about Amy having “no personality” (not true), but that could be easily fixed in her year. People still love her. And to be honest they’re really just wanting her old personality back, not wishing she wasn’t talked about.
It’s only and specifically Tails that the actual disagreeing comments have fallen on, so it is absolutely not the right time for his year.
(Also I’m scared to call them “hate comments”, because it’s really just people saying that Tails fans are greedy and selfish for wanting a year of him as he already has a few games of his own, or asking why they’re talking about him when there were other characters in the video, not really “hate”, but it does show me how the fandom would react to his year being soon. 😅)
And as Shadow’s year made Sega produce Shadow themed things, if Amy’s makes Sega produce more CUTE items (as it likely would), having Tails’s year be sometime after Amy’s would definitely increase the chances of Tails having more cute/kawaii items (honestly anything with him is cute already, but I’m talking Sanrio character treatment)!
And in all honesty (and all irrelevance), that would grow my channel best too. 😅 If it happened sometime soon, while everyone’s annoyed at him, my channel (and everyone else who has a focus on Tails) would just get a bunch of haters. It would honestly not be fun at all…
So yeah, I went off on a tangent on discussing years of characters, but my warning to you was meant to be: if you like Tails, my advice would be to either stop commenting on it in videos with other characters, or please tone it down in comment sections, in order to not get aggressive replies. I’ve seen too many people getting them for liking Tails lately, and I don’t want it to happen to everyone. 😅
I know, people SHOULD state their opinions, but as he’s just a character and it’s not something that’s globally important, it should be easy enough to stop for now. I’m sorry, I just don’t want more disagreements… retaliating never fixes anything, it only makes people dislike Tails and his fans more, so I don’t want it to happen in general. If you ever want to talk about Tails, you can always talk here on my channel! 😄
And regarding the character year discussion:
Tails’s popularity is in Sega’s hands, whatever they choose to do with him now sets the stage for how he will be viewed in the fandom. I don’t know if I have any say about it, but for his own sake, I hope that, for now, he’ll be ignored.
