If you’re looking for a lake in pretty settings, Gattian Lake certainly fits the bill. This elongated lake, with its glacial waters, is framed by the snow-capped mountains that will leave you in awe!

The lake is completely the product of glacial runoff and precipitation, hence the water’s clarity and turquoise hue that makes it hit with photographers. The best place to view this elongated body of water is from the top of the mountains. Photographers seeking different views can hike up from there or even down to the lake itself.

When is the best time to visit Gattian?

The lake gets accessible June till September. But the best time to visit is last week of July till third week of August, when nature awakens, with lambs and wild horses bouncing around the lush green fields, wildflowers blooming at their best and the earth seems to have come to the life again.

How do I get to Gattian Lake?

The lake is accessible from Dowarian the base camp of Ratti Gali Lake, by an unmetalled 18 kilometers road cum hiking trek through breath-taking sites. Dowarian is about 101 km from Muzaffarabad. The trek to Gattian starts from the campsite of Ratti Gali, and would take around 6 to 7 hours to reach the Lake.

Nestled at a breathtaking 13,500 feet in the Shounter Valley, Chitta Katha Lake is a mesmerizing spectacle. Its emerald green waters, shifting to turquoise hues, create a surreal scene.

Reaching this alpine gem is a challenging adventure involving a jeep ride to Upper Domail followed by an 8-10 hour trek. However, the reward is unparalleled. The lake’s secluded beauty, best enjoyed from July to September, makes the journey worthwhile.

• Kel to Houz Village or Chitta Katha Tent Village (Base Camp of Chitta Katha Lake): 20 km (2 hours 10 minutes) 4WD

• Kel to Shounter Waterfall: 28 km (2 hours 50 minutes)
• Chitta Katha Tent Village to Shounter Lake: 6 km (35 minutes)
