Divas in the City Co-Executive Producer, Tameka Citchen-Spruce, spoke on Saturday at the Light Up Livernois: The Art of Filmmaking Panel, sharing her inspiring filmmaking journey. Recognizing how challenging the industry can be, she aims to motivate other creators to keep pushing forward.
During the Q&A, when asked by an attendee how to stay committed to telling your story despite discouragement or obstacles like being denied the chance to film, Tameka offered heartfelt advice to encourage perseverance and passion. Here is a part of what she shared:
"As a person with a physical disability, I faced discrimination right out of high school when a broadcasting school told me I couldn’t attend. But I didn’t let that stop me — my passion was stronger. If you have a story to tell, especially one rooted in your community or sparked by the lack of representation, don’t let anything hold you back. You have a story that must be told.”
