Witnessing Art in Exile: Neha Sati’s “Through a Student Lens” and Esha Sadr’s “Absence of Us” at Hillyer Gallery

Attending the screening of Through a Student Lens by filmmaker Neha Sati at Hillyer Art Space was a truly special cultural evening in Washington. The film offers an intimate three-year portrait of Iranian multidisciplinary artist Esha Sadr as she develops the powerful body of work that culminates in her exhibition “Absence of Us.”

Sadr’s story is one of exile, resilience, and artistic defiance. After being warned not to return to Iran because of her art, she transformed personal garments and memories into sculptural works that reflect both loss and identity in diaspora.

It was also a personal honor to discover that a small moment of the film includes excerpts from an artist talk I had the privilege of hosting with Esha Sadr weeks earlier. Seeing that conversation become part of the film’s narrative was deeply meaningful—a reminder that dialogue around art can travel far beyond the room in which it first occurs.

A memorable afternoon where cinema, contemporary art, and intellectual exchange beautifully converged. 🎬🎨

Conversation on Memory, Migration, and Art: Moderating an Artist Talk with Esha Sadr on Absence of Us at IA&A at Hillyer in Washington, DC

I had the pleasure of moderating an artist talk with Iranian multidisciplinary artist Esha Sadr about her exhibition Absence of Us at IA&A at Hillyer in Washington, DC as part of Second Saturday.

The exhibition is a powerful long-term interdisciplinary project where Sadr transforms used garments into vessels of memory, identity, and resilience. By treating clothing as a “second skin,” the works reveal the personal histories carried within everyday objects and reflect on the experience of migration—being present in a new place while remaining emotionally tied to another.

Absence of Us invites viewers to think about what we carry with us, what we leave behind, and how memory endures even when places change.

A conversation on art, memory, and migration.
On Saturday, March 14, I will be in dialogue with Iranian artist Esha Sadr to explore her powerful exhibition Absence of Us at IA&A at Hillyer in Washington, DC.

Absence of Us transforms worn garments into sculptural narratives of memory, identity, and resilience. Through installation, mixed media, video, and collective participation, Sadr reflects on the emotional landscape of migration—the experience of being present in one place while feeling the enduring absence of another.

Our conversation will explore the ideas, materials, and personal histories embedded in this work, as well as the broader questions it raises about displacement, belonging, and the traces we carry with us across borders.

We hope you will join us for what promises to be a thoughtful and engaging dialogue.

Inside the Closing Night of Transversal Imprint: Cultures, Places, Selves.

What an extraordinary conclusion to Transversal Imprint: Cultures, Places, Selves at the DC Arts Center.

The closing gathering was more than a celebration; it was a culmination of dialogue, introspection, and shared creative energy. The works — spanning photography, painting, and installation — invited a profound meditation on belonging, displacement, and cultural memory.

Curated by Zixin Shang, the exhibition assembled a powerful roster of artists — Ramin Etemadi-Bozorg, Zeqian Hu, Kevin Kwon, Ran Feng, Dina A.Z. Salem, and Hazal Weil — whose practices intersect across geographies and sensibilities, yet collectively articulate the intimate complexities of self and place.
