Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, born on October 10, 1985, in Lucknow, India, is a trailblazing Indian Air Force officer and astronaut who made history as the first Indian to visit the International Space Station (ISS) on the Axiom-4 mission, launched June 25, 2025. A skilled test pilot with over 2,000 hours of flight experience on aircraft like the Su-30 MKI and MiG-21, Shukla was inspired by the 1999 Kargil War to join the National Defence Academy, earning a B.Tech and later an M.Tech in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science. Selected for ISRO’s Gaganyaan program in 2019, he underwent rigorous training in Russia and the U.S. As the pilot for Ax-4, alongside commander Peggy Whitson, he conducted microgravity experiments, contributing to India’s growing space legacy.
