We are constantly being told that Heat Pump Tumble Dryers are the ultimate "green" solution. But what happens when the people who actually fix these machines look under the hood?
This Thursday, a panel of veteran appliance engineers are getting together live to break down the real pros and cons of these machines being forced upon us. No marketing fluff—just the cold, hard facts from the repair trenches.
Here is what the government and manufacturers are missing:
The Time Tax: Vented and condenser dryers usually take an hour to 90 minutes per cycle. Heat pump dryers? They can take twice as long to dry the exact same load.
Double the Wear & Tear: Because those cycles take twice as long, the internal components are working twice as hard just to maintain that efficiency. That means double the mechanical strain on the machine's moving parts.
The E-Waste Trap: Yes, heat pumps conserve energy on your smart meter. But with parts working twice as hard, these highly complex machines often only last 5 to 7 years before suffering a terminal failure. We cannot build true sustainability on throwaway culture and overflowing landfills.
The Rural Reality Check: The regulations completely ignore how real people live. What about the millions of people who keep their dryers out in cold sheds or unheated garages? Heat pumps struggle in low temperatures, yet the policies only ever consider one side of the story.
Who Actually Wins? If the longevity isn't there, the consumer certainly doesn't see the beneficial gains. The only real winners are the manufacturers selling more replacement units.

🔴 Live Stream Update
I'm absolutely gutted to let you know that we won't be able to go ahead with our planned live stream today. Tom and I are currently up to our elbows stripping down a particularly stubborn dishwasher and to be completely honest, it's turned into a bit of a nightmare. It’s taking far longer to sort out than we originally anticipated.
