Diving headfirst into the overgrown jungle of gear talk for the “prepared citizen” and eventually clawing our way back out, slightly more paranoid and significantly poorer.
My mission is to help prepared citizens starting from the ground up building out their equipment. Recommending serious fighting and sustainment equipment and to accelerate individuals learning and research curve.

Last weekend, the Watauga County amateur radio club got together for a field day, where I got to test out some digital modes for the first time. This picture is of me working FT8 on my Yaesu 857-D with the Digirig. Unfortunately, I actually did not make any contacts although I did listen to plenty of stations in the region. HF conditions have been very spotty and strange. As you can see in the picture, we also had a surprise rainstorm that rolled in. I quickly covered my equipment and nothing was lost in the process, thankfully!
I did not make any contacts however I did learn how to use WSJT with FT8, how to time sync with my computer to even receive FT8 packets, got my Digi rig drivers installed, and configured properly, and lastly, I got a really cool grid square locator app installed on my Garmin Epix watch for FT8 and WINLINK usage. Overall the day was a win. Getting into digital modes is a lot of work, setup and a lot of knowledge. Thankfully, I had some help along the way.

Got out on the trails this weekend with the FLC and Mystery Ranch Terraframe. Tried out out hoisting my slim Jim antenna into trees using an arborist rope and 11oz weight 🌲📡
The weight and rope allows you to throw your antenna up over higher tree limbs, using the tree as a mast. This is a 2m / 70cm slim Jim by N9TAX labs that works great for this purpose.
And with the DMR 6x2, I’m able to get into DMR repeaters in the area as well
I’ll be covering some more content on this antenna with the manpack portable TYT9800 in the future 💪

For those of you that don’t know and care, the Yaesu FTM 500-DR’s control head extension cable is THE SAME as a standard Ethernet cable!!! This means if you have one laying around it will do the job, no need to go out there and buy Yaesu’s
I am doing some quick programming tonight before the Yaesu FTM-500DR programming video drops tomorrow 💪 I have this cable I study while my Yaesu cable is tied up in my truck, and very hard to get out.

The TAP in its final configuration?!?
The TAP got upgraded to a 3” H-Harness by Velocity Systems, giving it MUCH more support for the weight that this thing holds upfront. 🏋️
It is actually very similar in width to the FLC, and this was the goal in mind. The FLC’s H-Harness distributes weight much more effectively than the bra strap that spiritus systems provides. 💪
This should have been added a while ago, and for the same price as any other H-harness on the market ($47) it actually adds some real value. 💵
I have also added some Amazon special Krydex mag inserts which work exceptionally well, the lighter mag retention out of the box works better for this setup. 🪖Bungee tabs have been added in mag cells 1 and 6 (on the side wings). And lastly I have added a USGI med pouch on the far left under my armpit to house my night vision while being able to hold Medical and a Canteen. ⛑️
I also added a bungee tie to give the main GP pouch a squeeeeze
I removed the USMC dump pouch on the bottom, I did not find myself using it much but perhaps it will make a comeback 👌

Here is an all black soft / hard armor vest from Safelife Defense with a few accessories from left to right, a Blue Force Gear Micro Trauma Now, a Safariland QLS receiver plate, a spray painted USGI surplus x2 mag pouch, and 2 spray painted USGI taco pistol mag pouches. Cool thing with whatever nylon they are using to make these vests out of, it is not super absorbent of the IR light and looks pretty good under this Gen 3 Elbit PVS-14 tube! The black nylon Molle webbing however appears very black and stands out. Very cool to see that not all black nylon looks the same under night vision!
