The Brown Psych Channel

I’m Dr. Marinette Asuncion-Uy, Psy.D.—a Filipino American Clinical Psychologist, a soft voice in a world that taught us to harden. Born and raised in the Philippines, shaped by migration and memory. I created this channel for those healing from intergenerational pain, inner child wounds, and the myth of being “too much.”

Here, we speak of mental health through the lens of kapwa, ancestral memory, and decolonial healing. I know what it’s like to carry too much too soon. This is my offering to you.

Kaya halika, anak ng dagat, ilog, araw at buwan.
The wind knows your name. The soil has never forgotten you.
The healing you seek is already seeded in your footsteps.
Walk on. You are being carried home.

Have you ever wondered how much of the quiet anxiety, self-doubt, or pressure to perform you carry is actually an intergenerational echo of our history?

Join us inside The Hilom Collective for Internalized Oppression, a reflective session where we’ll untangle how colonial mentality has shaped the way we understand our identity, our self-worth, and our relationships. Together, we will move the healing question from "What's wrong with me?" to "What happened to us?".

Together, we’ll gently begin to name what we inherited, untangle our worth from our achievements, and make collective space to reclaim our loob (inner self) and restore our ginhawa—our shared, ease of breath

Choosing to feel deeply and live authentically as a Filipino isn’t always easy. In a culture that values harmony and self-sacrifice, embracing your emotions can feel like a rebellion. You might face judgment, loneliness, or even guilt for breaking unspoken rules—but these costs are part of reclaiming your truth.

Authenticity isn’t about being fearless; it’s about honoring your emotions, even when they feel inconvenient or misunderstood. It’s in this courage that you create space for ginhawa—true inner peace and holistic well-being.

Growing up in a Filipino household, many of us learned early on that emotional suppression was the norm. From an early age, we were taught to prioritize harmony over honesty—silencing our true feelings to meet expectations and avoid judgment. Over time, this led us to question who we really are. It becomes harder to distinguish our authentic selves from the roles we were expected to play.

How many times have you found yourself wondering, “What do I really want?” or “Who am I outside of all these labels and expectations?” It’s not just a phase—it’s a pattern many of us struggle with long into adulthood.

When we meet someone who is unapologetically themselves, it can feel like a threat instead of a relief. Why?

Because their authenticity mirrors the parts of us we’ve been conditioned to suppress. That’s the cost of not being validated—of never being shown that it’s okay to take up space, to be seen for who we truly are.

But here’s the truth: you are enough. Your true self has always been there, waiting to be discovered. Healing starts when we make space for our emotions, our voices, and our true identities.
