Yehuda Aharon Widawski, the oldest Holocaust survivor in Israel, has passed away at the age of 107.
Born in 1919 in Turek, Poland, he survived the Lodz Ghetto, Auschwitz, and Nazi forced labor camps. He made aliyah in 1950 - and then, in 1978, he went back to Poland.
Not to forget. To remember.
For decades, he dedicated his life to locating, documenting, and restoring Jewish cemeteries and graves across Poland - identifying over 3,000 burial sites and preserving the memory of communities that were wiped from the earth.
In 2012, he was chosen to light a torch at Israel's official Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony.
He survived the worst humanity had to offer - and spent the rest of his life making sure the world would never forget those who didn't.

As someone who gave him the benefit of the doubt then - and won't stay silent now.
"He stood in front of a stadium full of music-loving families, with violent images from a war on the screens, dedicated a song to the movement of his choice, and then took the mic to tell all of the Jews in the stadium that it wasn't about them. You don't get to decide that for us."
"You don't have to agree with one thing Israel's government does to not want the Jewish family two rows down from you to be scared or targeted at a concert."

On October 7, 2023, Avinatan Or was kidnapped from the Nova music festival in southern Israel - dragged into Gaza alongside Noa Argamani, in one of the day's most widely seen videos. Noa was rescued in June 2024, but Avinatan remained in Hamas captivity for more than two years, most of it in isolation. Ahead of his new book's release, he shared: "For more than two years I was a captive, alone. I never stopped thinking, not for a moment, and I never forgot that I alone was responsible for my fate. After more than a year in captivity, I decided that just as you were fighting for me above the ground, it was my turn to fight beneath it - and do everything I could to escape. I planned and dug, over months, my own escape tunnel - more than 10 meters, with my hands." He was finally released in October 2025.
