Today we lost a legendary actor. Japanese cinema legend Tatsuya Nakadai has passed away at the very respectable age of 92. He was known for his historical samurai roles especially in Kurosawa movies. He was the main villain in Yojimbo, as well as the tragic protagonists of two of Kurosawa's later films Kagemusha and Ran.

Any japanese cinephile though would undoubtedly know him as the vengeful and tragic ronin Tsugumo Hanshiro in the 1962 masterpiece Hara Kiri. Nakadai was so versatile that he could play heroes and villains with great authenticity, though his intense gaze and commanding deep baritone voice gave him a major advantage when playing villains. He was insanely prolific too, acting in films all the way through his twilight years.

He's an actor I've admired for nearly as long as I've been learning about foreign cinema, and his notable films are among my all time favorites.

He's had a career spanning 70 years and over 160 films, so checking out his work would be rather daunting to the uninitiated, but if I were to give recommendations I would absolutely recommend all the films mentioned so far but also films like:
The Sword of Doom
The Human Condition Trilogy
Goyokin
And Samurai Rebellion

To pay my respects I had to research some japanese sayings but I think I found a good one. Gomeifuku o oinori moushiagemasu, Nakadai sama (May your soul rest in piece Mr. Nakadai)

Had a bit of tough week, didn't work on the video for about 4 days. I'm back at it though, hopefully will have part 2 up by mid October if not the end of this month.

I apologize for the confusion upon the initial upload folks, I didn't understand what the premiere function actually meant, so I decided to just make it a public video for everyone to watch at whatever time is convenient for them. In the future when I do actual premieres I'll make it a notion to time them better.
