I am capturing these videos to share all that I have learnt from the great Han Jian. The purpose here is to capture and archive Han Jian's knowledge so that anyone with the willingness to learn may benefit from it. Ironically, only those who are truly willing to learn will appreciate this knowledge.
I was trained in playing badminton using the Malaysian and Indonesian techniques in my youth as a doubles specialist. Due to knee and ankle injuries I suffered when I was 16 years old, I decided to stop the pursuit of my dream of playing badminton professionally.
After joining Han Jian's training in together with my children, Han Jian helped me recover from my injuries by correcting my footwork and movement. Not only does his techniques improve my skill level and fitness, I am now able to prevent injuries. I have also discovered that Han Jian's techniques has elements of sword fighting wushu and taichi, ancient exercises with healing properties.
These videos are dedicated to Han Jian.

Changing to pace of the rally, is a ways to control your opponent and win the point. Commentators such as Jill Clarke and Steen Pedersen always mentions during matches. Even Han Jian always states that we have to change the pace. What exactly do they mean? Let's discuss.

As the new year arrives, I will be refreshing the website, moving some of the 2025 pages lower to make way for new 2026 pages. So please do expect some changes in the Navigation Bar.
One major announcement from the last significant Junior Tournament in 2025 for us in Selangor. The Selangor Closed Juniour Tournament 2025 has been expanded as they received a lot more entries than they were expecting! It now starts on 17th December until 24th December! To all of you who signed up, please take note! And I will see you there on those dates!
YouTube Channel Member's Content Update: Added more raw videos and 1 tournament match from October. There are many more tournament videos coming soon as December is looking to be a month with a lot of Junior Tournaments. I am working as quickly as I can to upload those tournament videos.
Channel Guide:
Monologue videos are the Flagship videos of this Channel. In these videos, I will talk through the Chinese style technique we are learning from Han Jian, make comparisons, provide insights, etc.
Lecture videos are the Main videos of this Channel. It is a recording of the actual lessons during training, correcting mistakes, teaching new skills and so on.
Raw videos are the unedited training video which shows exactly how the entire training session unfolded with no cuts. There are so many things which happen on training day, there are many interesting tit bits which I could not include on YouTube. It is all there in the raw video.
If any YouTube Channel Member wants to see a certain part of the raw video as a separate video with subtitles and another camera angle, zoomed in, etc, just drop me a note with the video name and time stamp, and I will create that video for you.
For MYR 5 or a little over US$1 on YouTube, you can access all the raw videos since April 2024, friendly matches and tournaments. Plus that option to create a video specifically for you out of the raw video with subtitles, zoom, slow-motion and another camera angle. All for being a YouTube Channel Member. The money collected here will be used to maintain the YouTube channel and to fund a future project.
Training Updates:
Fred is showing great progress lately. In the latest inter school tournament, his school was playing against 7 other school teams in a Thomas and Uber Cup like setting, held over 2 days. Each team has 3 singles players and 2 doubles pairs. Fred was leading his team by playing 1st singles. His team won the tournament, and the girls' team was runners up.
Fred won most his matches, the only blip was when he came down with cramps in day 1. What impressed me the most was how he picked himself up after the set back and came back in day 2 and won all his remaining matches. This is not an easy feat as the competition was very strong. All the school present had strong players for their first singles.
Given the lack of results in tournaments he has been experiencing since March this year, this is a good turnaround, just in time for the last and most important tournament for Fred this year, the Selangor Closed Junior Tournament.
That's all for this entry.
Until the next update, eat well, get plenty of rest, and keep the badminton going!

Continuing of the blog entry last week on Formations used in doubles, I have added a Talking Tactics page on Offensive Tactics for Men's doubles. This page dive into more details on the formation used, going into where to attack, and what is the best position to take for the follow up after the attack.
Check it out on the website here: stevesbadminton.com/advanced-topics-advanced-topic…
No new additional tournaments added this week for the Junior Tournaments page. There were none which made the cut usually from unclear or lack of information.
Check out existing tournaments which I gathered here:

YouTube Channel Member's Content Update: Added more raw videos and 1 tournament match from September.
I have started recording slow motion videos for the Monologue, and next step would be to finalize the script and record. Before that, I will edit slow motion videos to see how they line up with the script and make some adjustments based on that.

We often see when going for attacks in doubles, the players tend to stack up. The player at the back would be attacking, and the player covering the front seems to go right in front of the attacking player. What are the options for attacking? Let's discuss.

In my coaching sessions with Fred, we often discuss topics which are very deep. I like to cover topics which require a deeper understanding of the sport, so that Fred can prepare himself as best he can for the challenges ahead. One of these topics have often been the balance between skills, physical and tactics. What exactly is this? Let’s discuss.

Split steps – the key to moving fast
The past 2 weeks I have been in deep discussion with Fred on how to improve the timing of his split step, and also teaching Lucas the basics of the split step. This small detail is often overlooked and not discussed often by coaches. The assumption is that the player already knows this and there is no need to talk about it. I beg to differ. This is important at all levels, and it is even more important at the highest level. Let’s discuss.

Some local tournaments I do not add even though I come across them. This is largely due to the lack of critical information regarding the tournaments.
Also please note, I am covering only Junior tournaments, not senior tournaments. Who knows? In the future I might cover everything.
YouTube Channel Member's Content Update: More raw videos and tournament videos added. More tournament videos coming soon.
I finally managed to buy the Godox tube light I needed to make talking head and monologue videos. More of these will appear soon!

I am now also being more selective with the videos which will be released. This is due to productivity reasons. It is getting very tedious to release many videos, so I will focus on the multi-shuttle videos to see how we are doing, and some lessons and lectures from Han Jian and myself.

Why do some players come of age sooner than others?
In a quiet week for international badminton, where only several smaller tournaments are going on, it gave me a bit of time to think. Some players seem to reach their peak much sooner, other slower. This is an interesting topic to note, let’s discuss.
I compared 6 world number 1 players for men's singles and got some interesting insights.
Read more about it on the blog here: stevesbadminton.com/2025/10/03/why-do-some-players…
Updates on the website: More local tournaments in Malaysia for October and November have been added to the local tournaments page: stevesbadminton.com/local-tournaments-malaysia-202…
What started as a slow month for tournaments exploded. There are more coming. I have yet have the time to add in all that I found yet. Stay tuned!
YouTube Channel Member's Content Update: More raw videos added. I recorded one monologue video over this weekend, but not in the usual format. I was explaining to Fred on micro adjustments needs to deal with different playing conditions, and how using different racquets and different shuttle speeds help him learn how to do it. I am figuring out how I am going to edit this video out, as I was doing it without facing the camera. Perhaps a talking head video?

China Masters 2025 men’s singles final: A clash of the stars of tomorrow
The final between Lin Chun-Yi and Weng Hong Yang was a final which a proof of the coming of the two of them in the international badminton scene, proving the potential which I saw in the both of them when they appeared on the badminton scene after Covid-19 in 2022. Let’s discuss.
Read more about it on the blog here: stevesbadminton.com/2025/09/22/china-masters-2025-…
Updates on the website: More local tournaments in Malaysia for October, November and December have been added to the local tournaments page: stevesbadminton.com/local-tournaments-malaysia-202…
There are plenty added in already, some of the tournaments start in early October! So please do check out the page if are looking for tournaments to play then.
The biggest tournament I have added is the Selangor Junior Closed Tournament 2025. This is open only to children who are attending school in Selangor. The biggest thing about this tournament is that it opens the door to the Selangor State team. So... it is in effect the Selangor State team selection. Better pay attention to this one!
This tournament, the Selangor Junior Closed Tournament 2025 is not as easy to register for. It is organized by the state, and because of that, it is old school. You will need to be physically present on the premises during office hours to fill up the form and pay the entry fees. Please take note.
I have added a lot of content for MSSM 2025. The state government in Perak did a wonderful job in providing content. It was very disjointed, but I have put them all together on this page for easy reference: stevesbadminton.com/junior-tournaments-in-malaysia…
YouTube Channel Member's Content Update: More raw videos added. I also added 2 tournament matches from the one in July. There will be more tournament videos coming as we go for tournaments.

On the training front, Fred went for another junior tournament over the weekend and was beaten early by the semi-finalist. No shame is losing to a good player. But, as usual, I am valuable insights into where he needs to improve, and we will work on that.
We are working on a way of playing for Fred, like rallies, attacks and defence. I will not be curating these as videos on YouTube, but these are available in the raw video. We will be focusing a lot of this now as this is what he needs to get to the next level.
That's all for this entry.
