Defy Negative Attitudes
Defy: Hip-hop has always been about challenging the norm, flipping the script, and pushing back against systems that try to hold you down. From battling on the streets to pushing boundaries with sound and style, it's a culture of defiance. "Don’t follow, lead"—that’s the mentality.
Negative: This could be a reference to all the negativity—whether it’s poverty, violence, prejudice, or systemic issues—that the people in the streets and within hip-hop culture have faced. Hip-hop was birthed from struggle, and that negative energy is what fuels the fire to rise up and speak out.
Attitudes: These are the attitudes hip-hop has had to combat over time. Whether it’s the way people view the youth from the streets or the dismissal of hip-hop as “just music,” the culture has always had to battle against being misunderstood or disrespected. The attitude of resilience, pride, and confidence in the face of judgment is what defines the culture.
