When I first dreamed about living the #vanlife, I never pictured myself in an ambulance conversion — but turns out that's what I’ve always wanted.
Back in 2020, my father-in-law stumbled across this retired ambulance on Craigslist. She was just within our budget, and since she had been a student emergency vehicle, I knew she had been serviced regularly and maintained on a strict schedule — exactly what you want in a future tiny home on wheels. It was an easy YES.
What I didn’t realize was that saying yes meant we were signing up for a 4-year DIY camper renovation project. From gutting the inside, to wiring, plumbing, building custom cabinets, and figuring out how to make this space a cozy, functional off-grid home, we learned so much along the way.
Fast forward to today: we’ve spent a total of 7 months traveling full time, exploring breathtaking national parks, visiting friends and family, and embracing the nomadic lifestyle we always dreamed of.
To be honest, converting this ambulance was the best decision we ever made. She’s become more than just a vehicle — she’s our adventure rig, our safe haven, our ticket to freedom, and the heart of countless memories.
I personally love watching other people’s camper van builds and seeing their unique visions and personalities come to life, so I’m beyond excited to finally start sharing our own journey with you.
If you’re curious about living on the road, want ideas for your own van build, or have specific questions about ambulance conversions, drop them in the comments — we’re here for it!
