The road behind Safed Baradari connecting Begum Hazrat Mahal Park to Amir Ud Daula library will now be known as Prof Sukhvir Singhal Lane.
The announcement to rename the road after famous wash painter Prof Sukhvir Singhal, who had a strong Lucknow connection, was made by mayor Sanyukta Bhatia in a programme organized to mark his 16th death anniversary on Tuesday. She also inaugurated a gallery of his paintings at Lalit Kala Akademi in Kaiserbagh.
Speaking on the occasion, the mayor said Prof Sukhvir Singhal had enriched the painting scene in the country with his creations depicting Indian culture, tradition, religion-spirituality and philosophy.
“Renaming of the road and the gallery is a small tribute to Singhal, who was a true artist and a freedom fighter,” said Bhatia. Attending the event as special guest, Lalit Kala Academy president Sitaram Kashyap said Singhal had developed his own wash painting technique. His famous painting Baraat and Veer Shivaji in Aurangzeb’s court had become popular worldwide.
On the occasion, Singhal’s granddaughter Priyam Chandra, who is also a wash painter, shared the life journey of the eminent painter. She said Singhal was a disciple of Asit Kumar and took training from Lucknow Arts and Crafts College. He learned about music and singing in Allahabad at Kalabharti Sanstha and came back to Lucknow and joined Arts and Crafts College as a teacher, she said. “Later, he continued painting till his last breath,” Chandra added.
