Wapiti, or North American elk, are majestic, large ungulates found in North America. These impressive creatures are known for their size, with males standing up to 5 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing 600-1,000 pounds. Mature males sport massive antlers that can span up to four feet wide, making them instantly recognizable.
Their reddish-brown to dark brown coats, shaggy manes, and distinctive rump patches add to their visual appeal. Wapiti are adaptable and can be found in various environments, from mountains to grasslands and forests. They are herbivores, feeding on grasses, forbs, shrubs, and leaves.
Living in herds, wapiti are social animals with dominant bulls leading during the breeding season, known as the rut. Conservation efforts have helped protect these iconic animals from past threats.
