This is Song 10 and the final song in The Man Behind the Silence.
The journey began with:
“Everybody saw me standing,
nobody knew I was drowning.”
Across these ten songs, I wrote about hiding depression, pretending I was fine, feeling alone inside a crowded home, losing the person I used to be, carrying everyone else, sleepless nights, regret, self-forgiveness and finding one small reason to stay.
This final song does not claim that everything is suddenly better.
I am not standing at the end of the journey saying the pain has disappeared.
I am simply looking back at everything that nearly broke me and recognising something I spent years dismissing:
I survived it.
The line at the heart of this final chapter is:
“I’m not the man I thought I’d be,
but I am more than what happened to me.”

For a long time, I found it easier to say “I’m fine” than to explain what was really happening inside me.
I kept working.
I looked after my family.
I dealt with responsibilities and tried to be there whenever someone needed me.
From the outside, I probably looked strong and capable.
But there were mornings when I felt exhausted before the day had even begun. There were times I sat alone in the car for a few extra minutes because I was not ready to go inside and pretend I was all right again.
The line at the heart of this song is:
**“Everybody saw me standing,
nobody knew I was drowning.”**
This is not a song asking for sympathy.
It is me finally saying aloud what I could not say at the time — and offering the song to anyone else who has appeared strong while privately struggling to hold themselves together.
