New Portuguese Language Boost for Foreigners Launches in Portugal - "It's Not an App"

Portugal, July 2026 - A new language initiative launching this month is taking direct aim at one of the most common frustrations among foreigners living in Portugal: years spent meaning to learn the language, and never quite managing to speak it.

Speak Portuguese - Falar Português with the Á-Team, founded by broadcaster and long-term Portugal resident Carl Munson, is a live, community-based method built around actually talking — not another app, course, or classroom to add to the pile of good intentions already gathering dust.

"It's not an app," says Munson. "Most of us already have unused Portuguese-flavoured tech on our phones, dusty books on shelves and all kinds of other well-meaning, good-intentioned language learning aids lying around. What people are missing isn't information — it's structure, accountability, and the nerve to actually open their mouths."

Built on Lived Experience, Not a Teaching Certificate

Munson, who will have lived in Portugal for nine years this September, is candid about his own qualifications - or lack of them.

"I am not a teacher, and I'm not Portuguese," he says. "I'm a foreigner with a formula, and I know what it's like to be a foreigner. I also know what it's like to be a foreigner learning this language - right now, still, nearly nine years on, and regularly embarrassed!"

That personal admission is central to the project's appeal: rather than positioning itself as an authority handing down grammar rules, 'Speak Portuguese' leans into shared struggle as its main credential.

"I'm not a teacher," Munson adds. "I'm an encourager - and the interesting thing about that word, is it has 'courage' in it. That's what's actually needed to speak Portuguese, rather than just study it."

The Method: SWAT

At the heart of the project is a method Munson calls SWAT — Show up, Wing it, Adapt, Talk — built around intention and a weekly rhythm rather than a syllabus. The top tier attend a Monday goal-setting call, access daily community check-ins, and have a Friday debrief where members report back on their week's real-world attempts, successes and failures alike - with a drink!

You can progress through three levels: a free-to-join community 'CADET' tier, a Premium 'Boot Camp' of situational tactics and training, and then VIP 'Active Duty', granting access to the 'Á-Team' weekly calls - with a guarantee attached ... complete the programme as instructed, and if you still can't hold a basic everyday conversation, you get your money back.

Launched This Week

The project launched this week, alongside Munson's own public 90-day personal challenge to take his own Portuguese from "confrontational" to genuinely "conversational".
