UCC in Bengal: Why Is the Left Opposing It?
Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is coming to the centre of West Bengal’s political debate. But what exactly is UCC, why is the Bengal government pushing it, and why are the Left and other opposition voices resisting it?
In this video, we examine the UCC debate in West Bengal — its constitutional basis, the controversy surrounding religious personal laws, the arguments over equality and minority rights, and the political opposition to a common civil code.
We also look at the experience of Uttarakhand, India’s first state to implement a modern UCC, and examine what its implementation tells us about the possibilities and challenges of a uniform civil law. Uttarakhand’s UCC framework covers areas including marriage, divorce, inheritance and related civil matters. (UCC Uttarakhand)
For West Bengal, the debate has now moved beyond political rhetoric. The state government has formed a committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai to examine the proposed UCC framework. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has also pledged to implement UCC in Bengal within six months. (The Indian Express)
This video explores:
• What exactly is the Uniform Civil Code?
• What does Article 44 of the Constitution say?
• Why is UCC controversial?
• Why are sections of Muslim organisations opposed to it?
• Why has the Left historically been sceptical of UCC?
• Is opposition about minority rights, religious freedom, or political appeasement?
• What could UCC mean for marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption?
• What can Bengal learn from Uttarakhand?
• What are the major rumours and misconceptions surrounding UCC?
• Can UCC balance equality with religious freedom?
• And what could UCC mean for the future of West Bengal politics?
The central question is simple:
Can West Bengal have ONE civil law for ALL citizens without compromising religious freedom and minority rights?

New Upload - Why Reservation ?
We explore 5 key questions:
1️⃣ Why was reservation introduced in India?
How did historical social inequality influence the Constitution's approach to equality, affirmative action and representation?
2️⃣ Why does scarcity make reservation politically sensitive?
With millions competing for a limited number of government jobs, educational seats and other opportunities, why does competition increasingly become a question of identity and representation?
3️⃣ How did the Mandal Commission change Indian politics?
From the Mandal Commission to the implementation of 27% OBC reservation and the landmark Indra Sawhney judgment, we examine how reservation became one of India's biggest political issues.
4️⃣ How has reservation evolved?
We look at the continuing debates around SC/ST reservation, OBC reservation, the creamy layer, the 50% ceiling, EWS reservation and sub-classification—and ask the most important question: who actually benefits from reservation?
5️⃣ Is reservation only about opportunity—or also about protection?
Reservation is only one part of India's caste-policy architecture. The episode ends by introducing another major legal instrument: the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
The central question:
When historical injustice meets limited opportunities, does reservation remain only a mechanism of social justice—or does it inevitably become part of political competition?
