Watch Review Rewind

In 1973, Astronaut Col. William Pogue was heading to Skylab. NASA issued him an official Omega Speedmaster.

But Pogue had been training with his personal Seiko 6139 (bought for $71 at the PX) and he trusted it more.

So, he hid the Seiko in his spacesuit pocket during launch.

Once in orbit, he put it on his wrist.

The crazy part is that for decades, nobody knew. It wasn't until a watch enthusiast spotted the yellow dial in an old photo years later that the "Seiko Pogue" became a legend.

Watch Review Rewind

Everyone loves the Snoopy watch, but 50% of people don't know the story.

People ask why there is a cartoon Snoopy on the most collectible Omega Speedmaster.

It’s a "Thank You" for saving three lives.

The Story:
During the Apollo 13 disaster in 1970, the crew lost almost all power. Their digital timers were dead. To re-enter Earth's atmosphere without burning up, they had to fire the engine for exactly 14 seconds.

If they burned for 13 seconds? They bounce off the atmosphere into deep space.

If they burned for 15 seconds? They burn up on entry.

Astronaut Jack Swigert used his mechanical Omega Speedmaster to time the burn. It was perfect.

NASA gave Omega the "Silver Snoopy Award" the highest honor for flight safety. That is why the "Snoopy Speedmaster" is a grail today.

WATCH FACT 001: The Nautilus Flop πŸ“‰

In 1976 Patek struggled to sell the Nautilus.

It was a huge, clunky steel watch when everyone wanted small gold dress watches. They had to market it by bragging about how expensive it was just to get attention.

The Price Gap was INSANITY
When the Nautilus launched in 1976, it cost $3,100.

For context: A steel Rolex Submariner was about $230 - $300.

You could buy ten Rolexes for the price of one steel Nautilus. That is why people didn't "get" it.

They called it the "Jumbo" (42mm) because in the 70s, men wore tiny 34-36mm gold dress watches. The Nautilus looked like a monster to them.

It sold so slowly that Patek had to release a smaller "mid-size" version (Ref. 3800) in 1980 just to keep the line alive.

Now? You can't even get on the list.

Question...

How do you define a "Go Anywhere, Do Anything" watch?

Tried the New Dune White Ranger recently.

The standard 39mm (on my wrist here) and the new 36mm Dune dial, Tudor really nailed the simple, rugged aesthetic. Its not an 'Explorer Killer". It just feels like a totally different watch to me.

What do you guys think? GADA?
