新居浜太鼓祭り（Niihama Taiko Matsuri）is not your average autumn festival. Held annually from October 16–18 in Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture, this event is a thunderous tribute to tradition, strength, and community spirit. Known as one of the top three festivals in Shikoku, it draws thousands of spectators to witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of taikodai—massive, gold-embroidered drum floats weighing up to 3 tons and towering 5.5 meters high.
Rooted in gratitude for the harvest, the festival dates back over 1,000 years, with origins possibly in the Heian or Kamakura periods. The floats were originally offerings to local guardian deities (Ujigami) and became grander over time, especially during the Meiji era’s mining boom.
The event showcases raw power and coordination as teams of 150+ men lift and parade each taikodai through the streets. The highlight? The kakikurabe—a dramatic showdown where floats are hoisted and jostled in friendly competition.
