Oc part idk Roxy brought them to the docks the next morning. The mist was thick, rolling over the wooden planks like breath from some huge beast sleeping out at sea. Ships bobbed gently, ropes creaking, gulls crying overhead.
“Rumor says a group of smugglers saw a girl matching Takako’s description,” Roxy explained. “If we’re lucky, we might finally have a lead.”
Hana stayed close to Sae, gripping his coat. She didn’t like the ocean. Neither did he.
They hadn’t taken ten steps down the dock when men stepped out from behind stacked cargo—armed, grinning, waiting.
“Roxy Tachibana,” the scar-faced one said. “Did you really think you could keep searching for her? Your head has a price on it, you know.”
Sae froze.
Tachibana?
He whipped toward Roxy—but Roxy’s face was already tight with dread.
“Run,” Roxy said softly. “Sae—take Hana and run.”
But it was too late. The mercenaries lunged.
Sae’s blade left the sheath in a flash, movements more instinctive than conscious. He blocked the first swing, dodged the second, protected Hana with every step—but there were too many. Roxy fought beside him, moving with speed and precision Sae hadn’t noticed before.
Then Sae heard it—
A sickening, wet sound.
He turned.
Roxy had taken a blade straight through his side.
“No—!” Sae grabbed him as he fell to his knees, blood pouring over the wood. Hana gasped, covering her mouth, tears already forming.
The mercenaries fled—cowards when the tide turned—leaving only the sound of crashing waves and Roxy’s ragged breathing.
⸻
THE TRUTH
Sae lowered him gently onto the dock.
“Why didn’t you dodge…?” Sae whispered.
Roxy’s laugh was painfully soft. “Didn’t I tell you…? I knew Takako. Better than anyone.”
A pause.
Then—
“I’m… her brother.”
Sae’s chest tightened. “You’re—what?”
“Roxy Tachibana… isn’t my disguise. It’s my name.” He coughed, blood staining his lips. “I never died. I hid. They hunted our family… so I ran. And now…”
His eyes flicked toward Hana.
“They’ll come for her next. She’s… Tachibana blood too, isn’t she?”
Hana stared at him—confused, frightened, but brave.
Roxy reached for Sae’s collar, pulling him close with surprising strength.
“Listen… carefully. —Takako—she’s alive. She’s searching for someone.” His voice trembled. “She’s searching for you.”
Sae felt something inside him break—pain, recognition, longing all swirling together.
Roxy gripped his arm tighter.
“You must find her… before they do. Protect her. Please. I failed my family once—I won’t fail again.”
His breath shuddered.
“Go… save her…”
And then his hand slipped from Sae’s arm and hit the dock with a hollow thud.
Roxy Tachibana was gone.
The waves crashed softly below, as if mourning him.
Hana sobbed quietly. Sae closed Roxy’s eyes, bowing his head.
A promise from one dying man to another carved itself into his heart.
“I’ll find her,” Sae whispered. “I swear it. On your life.”
⸻
Far away, across the sea, at that exact moment—
Utako stood on a stolen fishing boat, the wind whipping her hair, determination burning through her grief and rage. Sae carried Roxy’s body to a quiet stretch of shore, far from the noise of the city. The waves rolled softly, as if mourning with him. Hana followed silently, clutching his sleeve with trembling fingers.
He set Roxy down and knelt. For a moment, he couldn’t move—could only stare at the face of the man who’d helped him, trusted him, and died trying to protect them.
Sae dug the grave with his hands. Dirt tore at his skin, but he didn’t stop until the hollow was deep enough. He laid Roxy inside gently.
“You didn’t deserve this,” Sae whispered. “I’ll finish your mission. I’ll protect Hana. And I’ll find Takako. I swear.”
Hana placed a small seashell on Roxy’s chest. Sae covered the grave, pressed his palm to the fresh earth, and bowed his head.

Then he stood, eyes cold and determined.
