Welcome to Recanteur, where stories from the heart of marginalized communities come alive. We’re dedicated to showcasing the voices of those often left unheard—artisans, local leaders, everyday heroes—who overcome daily challenges to create meaningful lives and inspire change.
At Recanteur, we go beyond storytelling; we’re building a bridge that connects these authentic voices to a global audience. Through the eyes of our community storytellers, or Kathakars, we bring you raw, real stories that reflect the courage, hopes, and dreams of people striving to make an impact.
Join us to watch these powerful stories unfold and become part of a movement that values every voice, every journey, and every effort. Let’s see, listen, and learn together.

In a small classroom filled with laughter and chalk dust, our kathakar pauses to capture a moment that might otherwise go unseen.
Because when communities tell their own stories, even the quietest voices find the power to touch the world.

In this image, Kathakar Mouli went to meet a lady in the Sundarbans, one of the few people still making the old Sundarbans traditional recipes, those are disappearing quickly.
While the lady shared her story, she cooked, stirred and mixed the meal. Every now and then, she would stop in the middle of her story, not because she had nothing to say, but because the food on the stove demanded her immediate attention, showing her dedication to preparing a healthy meal.
Sometimes, quiet actions tell more stories than fancy words.

Some stories are short. And some never really end.
Something like that happened with our Kathakar, Mouli, when she visited a couple to hear their story. The day slipped away, the sun dipped, the sky turned dark, and yet their story kept flowing.
That’s the beauty of stories, they don’t follow clocks or calendars. They keep unfolding, one layer after another. And that's what we do in Recanteur our stories continues to grow and expand.

The beauty of storytelling is that it doesn’t follow a script. It can unfold anywhere — at a ghat, on a ferry, between two strangers waiting for a ride.
That’s exactly how it happened with our Kathakar, Mouli. While waiting for her boat, she met an old lady — and in that quiet moment, a story was born. A story that might have drifted away with the tide, if not for someone willing to listen.

Kathakar Anusree from Bali island sits amid haystacks, closely watching something on her phone screen. It was her own story - how her life goes on with a husband who is a migrant labourer and a longing for married people to live under the same roof.
Anusree is a Kathakar at Recanteur, a Dance Teacher and a dedicated homemaker. She shares her regret of not being able to earn enough, for which she has to stay separate from her husband, while he toils away in an unknown city, with no one to ask him if he had dinner that night. Or the whole week for that matter. This situation creates an emotional and physical turmoil. By each year, finances become stable but connections are lost, silence fills the opposite end and dreams perish.
