Over the past three decades, contemporary Iranian artist Shirin Neshat has created politically-charged photography and film that explore the contrasts between Islam and the West, femininity and masculinity, public life and private life, and antiquity and modernity.
In an interview with Nick Knight as part of Photo London 2021, Neshat talks about film as a democratic art form, the differences between the worlds of art and fashion, and the importance of reaching an Iranian audience. 'Because my work is so political, I don't want it to just be seen by the art world. I want it to be seen by my mother, and people who are not that well off,' she says.
