I think a major contributor to the OPLA's success is just how fucking casual it is with portraying the weirder aspects of the source material.

A lesser adaptation would try to oversell the giant wax cakes and gunslinging sea otters as something to mock and ridicule, but the OPLA never does this.

It's treated as genuine worldbuilding rather than a punchline, and that goes a long way in making it feel immersive.

De' Zootopia 2 Thoughts...(no plot spoilers)

- Not as thematically challenging as the first film. The "lesson" of the story was fine, just kinda safe.
- The conflict between Nick and Judy was very genuine.
- The movie blueballs itself so much with shipping them that I kinda have to respect it.
- Conspiracy plot was more compelling than the first.
- Gary's relationship with Judy and Nick was half-baked. Technically was not necessary, but the marketing pushed a trio dynamic that didn't exist.
- Lesbian beaver was alright.
- Comedy was too "in-your-face" for my liking. A couple gags were gut-busting.
- Emotional scenes hit HARD when it needed to.
- The antagonists were waaaay more interesting than Bellwether.
- Worldbuilding was beautiful, but the film moves so fast it was hard to capture the scope of it at times and that made it feel smaller than it actually was.
- Dialogue didn't feel as sharp or clever. But the performances were on-point.
- More zippy, cut-heavy action. A bit exhausting at times.
- Color grading was simply gorgeous.
- Composition of certain shots was breathtaking as hell.

Final result: I liked it a lot for a bunch of separate things...but I liked the first movie more in its totality.
