David Vetter was born in 1971 with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) 🫧 A rare genetic condition that left him without a functioning immune system.
To protect him from everyday germs, doctors created a sterile plastic chamber for him to live in. Approximately $1.3 million was spent on his specialized care before his death. While the world knew him through a screen, David spent 12 years showing incredible resilience. With help from NASA, he was even able to wear a custom suit to walk outside.
Though his life was short, David’s legacy changed medicine forever. Research from his care revolutionized immunology and paved the way for modern treatments that save children with SCID today. 🕊️

​In the 1840s, Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis noticed a devastating trend at Vienna General Hospital: women in one maternity ward were dying of childbed fever at nearly three times the rate of those in another.

​The difference? The high-mortality ward was staffed by doctors and medical students who frequently performed autopsies right before delivering babies 👶🏻 without washing their hands in between. 🧫

​Semmelweis introduced mandatory handwashing with a chlorine solution. The results were immediate and astonishing: death rates plunged from over 18% to nearly 1%. 📉

​Yet, despite the undeniable evidence, the medical establishment violently rejected his findings. To Victorian-era gentlemen, suggesting that doctors' hands were carrying "fatal particles" felt insulting. Semmelweis was ridiculed, ousted from his post, and tragically died in an asylum without ever seeing his work recognized.🦠🖐🏻

​It wasn't until Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch proved germ theory decades later that Semmelweis was finally honored as the "Father of Infection Control." 🩺🦠🖐🏻🧼

Dolphins are biologically wired to dedicate all their energy and resources to a single offspring at a time, making multiple births an extreme rarity in the ocean. While dolphins can technically give birth to twins, it is virtually never seen in the wild. Twin pregnancies account for less than 1% of all cetacean pregnancies, and surviving twins are exceedingly rare because a mother's body is adapted to nurse only one calf.🐬
Female dolphins undergo an extensive gestation period that lasts anywhere from 11 to 18 months depending on the species. Because a dolphin calf must be born large, strong, and fully developed enough to immediately swim to the surface for its very first breath, the physical strain on the mother is enormous. A female dolphin's uterus is physically structured to accommodate only one calf growing to that viable size.🐬
On the rare occasion that twins are conceived and carried to full term, their chances of survival in the wild remain tragically low. Dolphin milk is exceptionally rich in fats and nutrients, requiring massive caloric intake from the mother to produce. In a twin scenario, the mother simply cannot produce enough milk or nutrients to keep two rapidly growing calves healthy.
Caring for a newborn is also an exhausting physical duty. A mother must keep her baby tucked into her slipstream🐬the wake created by her swimming🌊to help the small calf move through the water without tiring out. She must also constantly protect the newborn from predators like sharks while guiding it to the surface to breathe. Managing two calves at once splits the mother's attention and physical support, leaving both young dangerously vulnerable. Because of these intense physical demands, nature heavily favors single births to give every calf the highest possible chance of reaching adulthood.

And they didn't stop at just making them move, because they gave the entire fleet distinct personalities. One lid actually trash talks you if you miss a shot.
