With this auspicious Thuthi, I introduce the Vel Maral Maha Mantram series. I will be uploading a learning series where each verse will be taught one at a time. I will chant it in easy bits and my friend Hema repeats after me. It is set in such a way that you can learn and repeat along with Hema. Those who are interested may begin this journey by listening to the invocation Thuthi and seek Vinayakar’s blessings.

Vel is the Spear of Thiru Muruga Swamy, gifted by His mother Annai Parvati Devi. Vel signifies the destructive and protective power of Thiru Murugan.
Arunagiri  Nathar, the famous Saint-Poet of Tamizh,  has written a chapter  consisting of 16 verses  on the Vel called  Vel Vaguppu. Chanting it is supposed to put an end to diseases of body, mind and the soul.
Vallimalai  Satchidananda Swamigal   has  compiled  the “Vel Maral” of 64 verses, using the 16 verses of  Vel Vaguppu arranged in a specific repetitive order. This composition is considered a powerful mantra for protection and healing.

The Vel maral is essentially a composition of 16 verses repeated in a specific order to make a set of 64 verses. If we learn the 16 verses well, we can recite the complete set of 64 verses. So, I will help you learn each of the 16 verses with easy breakdown and lyrics in English as well as Tamizh. Once you are familiar with them, you can easily read the complete Vel maral.
For those who are not very familiar with the pronunciations, here are a few pointers
We have 3 “N” sounds. 2 are pronounced as “na” and one is pronounced as “Na”. While na is pronounced at the teeth, Na is a deeper sound produced by folding the tongue and touching the roof of the mouth with it.
We have 2 “L” sounds. The soft “la” is pronounced at the teeth, and the deep “La” is produced by folding the tongue and touching the roof of the mouth with it.
We also have 2 “R” sounds. Ans similar to the others, the soft “ra” is pronounced at the teeth, and the deep “Ra” is produced on the roof of the mouth.
There is a sound unique to Tamizh, which is the “zh” sound. Formed similar to the American pronunciation of “R” as in crowd, the Zh is a very softly pronounced sound. Tamizh, Pazham, Kuzhu…
The soft sounds are indicated as small alphabets and the deeper ones with capital letters.

Yamatryodashi
Today is the trayodashi which falls befor the start of Deepavali . It is the 13 th day of this fortnight leading up to the new moon day of Deepavali. It is the day we light a Deepa for Yama Dharmaraja- the lord of judgement and death.
We light a lamp praying for freedom from the fear of deaths and from “apamrtyu” and “akaala mrtyu”, death from unnatural means as well as untimely death, which means death before one s natural life span.
This is therefore to be done by every member of the family, one lamp per head.
You may light a terracotta, brass or silver lamp. And repeat this shloka after lighting the lamp.
